I have a living trust (to protect my assets, not just to get a can). Exactly what is the sequence of events to get the forms, and any other things necessary to buy a suppressor. Some say it's easy, but don't explain what to do first, second, ect. Help would be appreciated.

You find a dealer, order a suppressor, wait for it to be transferred to your dealer, fill out your paperwork, print out your full trust, then mail in those documents (application in triplicate, trust in full form), along with a $200 check to the BATFE, and then you wait a ridiculous amount of time. Just when you are about to forget that you bought a suppressor, your stamp MAY arrive. I am only a few months into the wait (sent in my papers in May, via a trust). That's pretty much the size of it. I'm sure someone will chime in with some stuff to add, but I covered all the stuff I did.

So, the dealer has to sit on the inventory for "months"? Don't make much sense for the dealer, unless he gets up front money, which doesn't make me real excited either. Can you get the application process out of the way before you shop for a can?

No. The form must include the serial number of the can. The ATF is approving that you can possess a particular item. That's how NFA works. The shops don't mind holding onto the merchandise until you get approved, and you can usually stop by and check it over if you like.

I've had a suppressor sitting at a local dealer since mid May. He took the transfer money up front and tucked the can away in his storage area. This is how it works. If you think a class 3 dealer is going to keep your money and your silencer, you don't understand the gravity of being regulated by the ATF. No dealer in his right mind would tempt that agency over a small amount of money and a suppressor.

Just the license for him to sell you that suppressor is 3,000 every three years. A normal FFL can mess up their paperwork and the ATF gives them a couple of chances to correct it (usually) a class 3 dealer screws up their paperwork there's a good possibility of jail time and oh your officially closed now and were are selling your inventory to this other guy on your behalf (seen that happen personally).

Don't get me wrong, I didn't mean to imply that the dealer would bamboozle me out of the money, I was questioning the fact that he, or I, had to have a significant amount of money doing nothing but sitting around. Now I understand that EACH can is licensed, not only the purchaser, it makes more sense. I thought that I was licensed to buy any old silencer the dealer had laying around, or I could order any can I desired. My bad. Bottom line is I have to decide on the can, find a dealer, pay for, and order the can, fill out application forms, copy the trust papers, wait, and then receive the can.
Now, if I do all this, do I have to do it all over again for another can? This makes it a bit difficult to shop for a can that you haven't tried to see if it's what you expected. How do you guys get around that? It can get very expensive if great care isn't taken.

Yes. You probably want to add "write a check and send everything to ATF" to that list right before "wait," otherwise you'll be waiting forever :)

Yes. You do the whole process every time you buy an NFA item. If you're making one yourself (SBR, SBS, silencer, AOW) then you get to skip the dealer part but you still have to do the rest.

Make friends with other people or dealers. Lots of dealers have demo items that you can test out before you buy. Also there are probably other THR members near you that have various NFA items, I'm sure they wouldn't mind shooting with you sometime.

There are lots of youTube videos out there. I chose my Osprey 45 shopping that way, it was also my dealer's recommendation. I'm set up to use it on three guns -- My FNP-45 Tactical, Glock 17L, and RRA 9mm AR. I'm waiting on SBR stamp as I think less than 16" barrel on the 9mm with the suppressor will be really nice with 147 gr ammo.

It's expensive no matter what you do, the suppressors cost more than most pistols or mainstream ARs.

This site is great. Now just weed out the idiots and THR is near perfection. (Unless I'm one of them..)

This is EXACTLY the info I was looking for when I checked into this thread.

Now to find a Class 3 dealer...

Any FFL/SOT can handle the transaction. The term "class 3 dealer" in many cases is technically erroneous and narrower in scope than reality.
