I have figured out what gun to get. Now I need to know what accessories I need.

I know I'm going to need a gun case, ammunition case, cleaning kit, new grips, and night sights. What brands and products do you guys recommend.

I found that Browning makes really nice gun cases. Does anyone recommend another brand?

I know the trijicon night sights. But do I need them if I'm only shooting at a properly lit, indoor range?

Do I need a holster? Bianchi, I found was nice.
What kind of belt, holding pouches for magazines and etc. do I need? What Brand?

What about cleaning kits and tools. What do I need to look for in a kit? What cleaners, brushes, etc needs to be in one. Who makes the best stuff?

Thanks in advance,
Richard

I like Bagmater bags/cases a lot, but I’m planning on making my next purchase from i-Shot Inc. I-shot is a poster on this board, so any business I can direct to him is a win for all of us. Nice looking stuff, and seemingly very well made.

Night sites are a nice tool to have. If you plan on CCW’ing your USP, do you think that you should only be prepared to shoot on a well-lit range? Black-on black sites are great for filly-lit ranges. If you want them, Trijicon and Meprolite make decent sights. Others may have different preferences.

If you’re going to CCW, a holster and belt is necessary, but don’t rush into it. Check out the offerings from everyone you can get your mitts on. Web searches will help a lot. You don’t need to pay an arm and a leg to get a decent holster – a lot of holster makers are also posters on the board. I like the offerings from Galco, but YMMV.

A basic pistol cleaning kit will be good to start with. Rod, jag, nylon brush, bronze brush, patches, Hoppes #9 and a bottle of Breakfree CLP will keep you shooting.

Oh, and old t-shirts and socks will never be thrown away in your household again. They’re too valuable as gunrags.:D

Buy Ammo / Use Up / Repeat.

I see you live in SoCal, so good luck getting a CCW. That said, only you can decide if you need a holster. The full sized USP is a challenging pistol to carry concealed, so you'd probably only use a holster if you are going to compete in some form. Now there's no reason not to get a holster, except to save the money. Good holsters are expensive.

Meprolight and Trijicon are the two brands of night sights that I'd recommend. Personally, I don't think that night sights are all that important to have, but that's been covered in other threads.

Dewey and Otis make the best cleaning supplies, IMHO. I also like the bore-snakes for some things, but they are not a complete cleaning solution (as they would have you believe.)

Hoppes #9. Enough said. Kindly resist the urge to drink it or use it as aftershave.

Get a bagmaster or i-Shot bag. For a single pistol and gear, something like the i-Shot Pro Shooter's Range Bag is simple and provides room for additional stuff.

Enjoy that pistol -- my first was a USPc in .40. I also own an HK USC (their .45 carbine) and a USP Tactical. I'm something of a fan, though I've recently been converted to a SIG P226.

I carried my USP in a deSantis 3-slot holster...just have to make sure your clothing suits it. There are inside-the-waistband options out there, but the USP is a pretty thick platform compared to some, so that may or may not be do-able for you. If you're just wearing the holster for looks at the range, don't worry too much about a belt. :p If you intend to carry for defense, there are various gunbelts available from holster manufacturers. I can't seriously recommend one over the other, but you definately want to look at something that will retain its rigidity over time.

HK pistols come in a hard plastic case that holds the pistol (with one magazine inserted), manual, and extra magazine. First inspection will also reveal the two-pronged key for operating the internal trigger/hammer/slide lock in a little bag. Hang on to that. ;)

I'm not big on night sights, as I'm in the camp that believes they can be distracting to the untrained. You don't want to lock eyes on three glowing dots when your focus should be on just one or are point-shooting. Then again, USPs have three-dot sights anyway, so it might not be so different to the eye in the dark with some Trijicons.

Wait on the new grips. I find that the standard USP grip works very well, so try it out and see what you think before buying anything special.

Also, you might look into the HK P2000 SK. It's slightly more concealable than the USP Compacts, has change-out grips (a nod to the Walther P99), and you can order them with custom LEM trigger weights down to 5.5 pounds or so.

Best of luck!

meprolights are about $60 at botach tactical. i have them on my USP, 40 and love them.

By the way, my USP probably has way more accessories than you'd care for, so i'll stop here.
