Despite a constipated, Democrat-run state legislature that did its best to foul up CO gun rights, I do plan on making deer season this fall if I can buy a decent tag. Having decided that I will use a .270 Win for deer, I went to the range today to run my Ruger 77 RSI in .270 Win through its paces to see if I still had a useful hunting rifle.
The target below reflects a load test with Sierra Match Kings I loaded last year... I have some Sierra Game Kings with the same powder charge and primer that I made up at the same time. If they work as well, I know what I'll be taking with me on the hunt. This 100-yard, 5-shotg group measured 0.75 MOA...good enough indeed, once I give it a couple of clicks to the right.
For those of you who think Ruger 77s don't shoot well, I urge you to take another look. I have Rems, Wins, Savages and Rugers for hunting and this Ruger that I got in 2012 will get the job done. This set-up is a R77 RSI with 18.5" bbl, Ruger factory rings and a Leupy 2.5-8x36 duplex scope. It's a wonderful stalking set-up. Hats off to Sturm, Ruger (with whom I have no relationship).
