Despite a constipated, Democrat-run state legislature that did its best to foul up CO gun rights, I do plan on making deer season this fall if I can buy a decent tag. Having decided that I will use a .270 Win for deer, I went to the range today to run my Ruger 77 RSI in .270 Win through its paces to see if I still had a useful hunting rifle.

The target below reflects a load test with Sierra Match Kings I loaded last year... I have some Sierra Game Kings with the same powder charge and primer that I made up at the same time. If they work as well, I know what I'll be taking with me on the hunt. This 100-yard, 5-shotg group measured 0.75 MOA...good enough indeed, once I give it a couple of clicks to the right.

For those of you who think Ruger 77s don't shoot well, I urge you to take another look. I have Rems, Wins, Savages and Rugers for hunting and this Ruger that I got in 2012 will get the job done. This set-up is a R77 RSI with 18.5" bbl, Ruger factory rings and a Leupy 2.5-8x36 duplex scope. It's a wonderful stalking set-up. Hats off to Sturm, Ruger (with whom I have no relationship).

Harry, happy camper

I have three 77s and love all three. Please don't use the match kings. I punched a pencil hole through a woodchuck with a 30 cal 168 and it died in its hole.

I love MatchKings for targets but use hunting bulllets for game. I've had good results with Sierra Game Kings, Nosler Accubonds, Hornady SSTs and Barnes TTSXs in several calibers...I won't be using matchKings for anything but range exercise.

Cheers,

Harry

Heh, I was at the range today with my 375H&H checking my zero for 4th season Elk. First time I have hand loaded for the 375. In a raging head wind, no kidding 35+ mph with much higher gusts, I was able to hold right at 3". Not amazing I know, but not bad for the conditions. I will recheck later when it is calmer.

Though I drew my desired tag I doubt I go this year. New job starts in Sept...

I've got a .375 H&H in a Rem 700 XCR II bedded in a B&C sporter stock. I love it for elk...and anything else that grows on this planet. I've found a great North American load of 69.0 gr of RL15 under a 260 gr Nosler AccuBond...I get about 0.5MOA at 100 yards.

Sorry to hear you'll miss the season...but hop[e the new job gives you all that you want.

Cheers,

Harry

My wife wanted to deer hunt but I had no gun that didn't kick the snot out of you, so I got her a Ruger 77 in .243 and could not be happier. It will shoot MOA all day long. Love it.

Flatbush Harry, not to change the subject but my Remington BDL Custom Deluxe that I bought brand new in 1972 in .270 will shoot the proverbial moa all day long using my hand loads. I used to shoot quite a few Muleys, and couple of nice Elk up around Rifle and Meeker Colorado.

Sorry to hear about your new gun laws.;)

Hunting season is not THAT far away, is it? Got lucky and drew double whitetail tags. Now I gotta wait to see how the antelope draw goes. Still have alittle twiking to do with my 7mm-08.

Looks like you're set to go. I agree. Sierra sure makes a nice projectile.
