I am looking to get started with a cap&ball revolver. I have read some of the relevant threads. What I have come up with is basicaly this...

-Get a decent brand
-Make it a steel frame
-I'm settled on .44 cal
-Get a starter kit

Ok, so a few people said to look at Cabelas, so I did, and they have a LOT of stuff.

Some of the kits and whatnot seem to have excelent prices, but the thing is... they do not say who makes them, which is REALLY odd to me. It seems like on the Cabelas site, a very few of the revolvers say "Uberti Model 18xx blah blah" and a couple say "Buffalo Model blah blah" but the vast majority of their stock has no brand name.

Does Cabela's make these themselves? If not, who? Are they any good?

Malice: Cabelas is an O.K. place to go to...They have many cap&ball pistols...I would recomend a 58 Remington(steel frame, cause brass will work loose), And a cap& ball starter kit. I hope this helps!

Malice,

Cabelas is a good company to buy from as they back up there products 100%
Most of the cap and ball pistols they sell are Pietta and are well made. I would choose a Remington type as they seem to shoot closer to the sights then the Colts. As to the starter kit, you would be better off buying the things you need seperately and get better quality. All you really need are a powder flask, .451 or .454 round ball, percussion caps, fff black powder or Pyrodex P, a nipple wrench, and some Crisco to keep fouling low. Cleanup is easily done using water witrh maybe a little dish soap.

I have a Pietta .44 1858 New Model Army Competition (progressive twist) I shoot .457 ball. I load powder then a lubed felt wad ( home made) then the ball.
After each cylindar I pull the barrel through with a cloth and some windex which I also wipe over the gun with on an old towel - keeps it all working well and is easier to clean at the end of the day.
For my first time out I put Bore Butter over the ball to prevent chain fire -what a bl**dy mess it made! It is not necessary - the ball and wad stop that.
Lube recipe and paper cartridge makings in the stikys at the tom.
ENJOY!

I`ve bought 3 1858 remmies from Cabelas .. they have the best price and a good return policy if you don`t like what ya get .. they`ll make it right .. i never had a problem with any of the 3 ..they are Piettas , i noticed the last one i bought has Cabelas on the top of the barrel .. might be why they aren`t showing who the guns are made by .. they want to you to think .. its a Cabelas ..hahaha .. well its still a Pietta .. and i`d still say if you don`t have anything to get you started buy the ones with the starter kit .. if you add up the prices of all the stuff it comes with ... you`ll be saveing a lot . you can buy better stuff latter when ya get hooked really bad .. hahaha .. i have 5 remmies now .. and still wanting more ! i want one of every flavor .:D
