I have a gewehr 98 sporter and the rear site the po put on it sits way too high, even adjusting it down all the way I'm off target hi at 50 yards. Its a sporter, so I am kind of leary of putting an original huge rear sight on it. I haven't really been able to find any info on this. Is there another option that would work for this?

Ah, I figured somebody would reply with that. I haven't really looked it up. I don't know how hi I need to go. Ill do some research and figure out the size of the dovetail.

Is it high at 100.

You'll have to do a little right-angle trigonometry based on your known high point-of-impact at 50 yards. This will tell you how much higher your new front sight must be to bring down the P.O.I. to where it needs to be. Numrich offers an assortment. Order several different heights and return any unneeded front sight posts for credit. This will sharpen your rusty math skills !

troy fairweather:

If a low-cost, taller front sight had been available about six years ago for my very nice "Yugo" M 48 Mauser, I might have kept the rifle a couple years longer.

The V of the rear sight leaf combined with the Inverted V ( ^ ) of the stock front post always looked strange, even with my very good eyes.
Maybe these were standard stock sights for German, Czech and Yugo Mausers?

I'm vaguely aware of the hugely complex history of Mausers, having seen the very thick Mauser 'Book' in Barnes & Noble about ten years ago.

Someone used to make replacement front ^ sights to bring the battle sight poa down. Some really seem to have trouble with that type of sight, I've always liked them but maybe I've just know is to use them. I believe the Germans were trained to aim for the belt, so a chest hit inside 200 or so meters.

I've seen my dad make a piece from old feller gauge, bent to the v and sweated on to raise the sight some.

I too have a Gew98 sporter. It has a redfield peep sight mounted to the bolt side of the receiver. No clue if something like this is still available as this rifle was sporterized in the '50s

Not gonna lie... this seems way out of my scope of practice. I'm tickled pink if I can draw a right triangle on graph paper with a ruler
