ghillie suit

fun, but unless you are trained at using one and the art of becoming invisible it probably won't be too effective.

While I have never used one I really want one just could never let go of the cash when I saw one.:banghead:. I have heard stories of people haveing used them turkey hunting and had turkeys literally walk over there feet. I have about half of one of those leafy camo type suits. I have been leaning up against a tree while hunting and had cows come up to me and try to eat my head suit and there not tame. It worked great until started busting up laughing:D.

i think jhco is right... i did see that cop show last weekend with the red headed guy on it looking for a sniper..... he was shooting from rooftops in a city and they said something about a ghillie suit the shooter was wearing........ would such a thing be effective in that application???

I'm making a top out of some old fatigues and camo. Might go as far as adding some burlap.

Anything that helps break up your outline is worth it. What I'm trying to do is try a match the netting on my ladder stand a bit more.

Are they worth it...ABSOLUTELY!

I am not sure what jhco is talking about...if he is talking about fooling people then perhaps he is correct...although I have had people while I was wearing mine walk within 10 yards of me looking for me and they did not see me and no one has ever taught me how to use it then again they were not trained to look for me while wearing that either and here is really the thing...if you are talking about using it hunting? I would bet no one has ever taught the game animals to look for you/it either.

If you are wondering if they really work then perhaps this will provide you with the testimonial you are looking for...I was deer hunting sitting in a tree stand with leaves surrounding me and I wore my gillie and just before dark...there was still shooting light...I had an owl land on the branch I was leaning up against within 6-8 feet of me and never even knew I was there. Now I do not know about you but in the light that was left and remember I was in the woods...trees all around so it was a little darker than out in the open and this owl NEVER saw me and they hunt at night! So if they break you outline and make you appear to be part of your surroundings then I would tell you they work...PERIOD!

i started making one out of an old fishing net and a bunch different fabrics ol' thirts burlap rope and spray painted it with brown and green looking pretty good so far my wife thinks i am crazy though. i just dont know anyone who uses them and i cant understand why seems like ultimate camo

They work very well when you are not moving and you have properly stuffed them with native vegetation. Their usefulness depends entirely on what you plan to do with them. If you hunt in a stand they probably wouldn't be all that useful, but if you sneak around they could be useful, and work VERY WELL when you are still and have stuffed them. If you airsoft/paintball they are good for that too.

I was trained in the Marines on how to use one, and how to construct one. A proper USMC suit is designed for lots of crawling, and has reenforced canvas panels on the knees, thighs, elbows, and chest for just that (well..., it did 20 years ago anyway ;) ). Anybody can use one while sitting still. Moving in one is a different situation. (imho) they are a waste of money when hunting game. Breaking up your outline and making it tough for a critter to recognize you as a threat, is very different from fooling another human looking for you with optical sights. The ones they sell are closer to what you'd want to avoid the human with the scope or binocs (though they don't seem to have the reenforcing canvas), not hunting. I'd suggest if you want something like that to make your own. They need to be color coordinated for the area and and the season where and when they will be used, and I doubt that a generic suit made someplace will be as good as what you can do yourself.

Loyalist Dave...what do you base your opinion on? I have used them hunting game and if used correctly...and they do reflect the terrain you are in so that they break up YOUR OUTLINE so you look similar to the surrounding vegitation etc my experience is they work. I am basing this on personal experience using them while hunting. Now if you were to ask me if I would have still taken the game without it would I...well we will never know simply because I did take game wearing it. The uses for them are different for hunting men and hunting game. If you use them for hunting game and understand what they will do for you and not expect them to be what they are not then they work. When I wear mine I simply want it to break up my silhouette and blend in with the surrounding terrain.

Other than turkeys, if you are hunting something such as deer, why do you need camouflage?? Animals are color blind and react to movement. You can wear blaze orange and if the wind is blowing right and you are standing shock still. a deer or other animal will pass with in a couple of feet and never see you. I've had does pass by me with in a couple of feet. Most states also require you to wear a orange or yellow hunting vest, so wouldn't that also negate the Cami??:neener:

Because you feel like you are camo'd! Why else? It makes you feel good! Gives you confidence...Makes you feel like you know what you are doing even when you don't. How many more reasons do you need!:banghead:

:D

I'd say they are a waste of money. The purpose of camo is the break up your outline. Humans, who see very good in color, are good at spotting un-natural looking items. That is where the gillie suite comes in... it uses local flora to blend in better. Animals, who usually look for movement and outlines and who don't see in color very well (but have excellent contrast vision) are very easy to fool. The old blotchy BDU patterns will work quite well. I have had deer walk within 15 ft of me while I was ground hunting when I was wearing an old but serviceable set of BDUs. I was just sitting on an old downed tree and up walks this beautiful doe and her fawn. The same day I had a squirrel jump over my leg without realizing I was there. I had on the BDUs, a blaze orange beanie, and tan jungle boots. All this new fangled cammo is just for our money... it doesn't work any better than the stuff people were wearing 100 years ago.

Ron,
Deer don't see reds and oranges from what I read. It just looks gray scale like the rest of the world. The only color that deer see well is blues from what I have read.

Waste of money if you are hunting in public land. They require orange vest.

Never used one but they look cool...as far as deer hunting, being still an not having them pick up your sent is number one, you can fool their eyes, you can fool their hearing, but if they catch your scent you won't fool the smart ones, an not too many of dumb ones either.
