A frined of mine has a sidearm with a ghost ring type site on it. I have never seen these before but loved it. Quick as hell to line up on a target. I have an operator, commander and a pt1911 and I am thinking of putting those sites on the pt1911 and the commander but I would like a trit. front site. Does anyone know anything about these and if I can get these sites for my guns?

Nothing? does this mean nobody has seen them or nobody has seen them for the 1911?

I've never been able to figure out how a "Ghost-Ring sight" could possibly work that far away from your eye.

It would be near nye impossible for the eye to keep from partially focusing on it with a clear front sight picture.

And if you can see it fairly clearly, it's not a "Ghost-Ring" sight.

Ghost Ring

I had one on a 1911 several years ago. Can't remember which gun but think it was a Norinco. Since I was using the gun only for stationary range shooting, I couldn't get as good accuracy as with open sights. For CC and quik acquisition, I think it would be good.

Useful and valid concept on long guns.
Poorly performing gimmick on a handgun.
Don't make a decision based on informal plinking.
Use a timer and try some El Presidente's and Mozambiques.
Check your scores.

I did a day of shooting with the ghost ring sites and lit it up. I wasn' trying to hit targets 75yds away but up to 30yds they were fantastic. I really don't know about farther away. We shot late into the evening and the tritium on them was every bit as good as the tritium on my operator. I have a plethora of rifles if I want to shoot something farther off and I keep 1 in my truck at all times along with a shotgun.

The thing about the ghost ring on a hand gun is you are able to see the sights and the target also, something I read but never have tried it. When you are shooting fast, and not aiming, the sights are not a big help.

I might get one now that I have read somemore about it, for hand guns. Just to see if it is good:uhoh:

Thanks

GR Sights

Harley, As best I remember, I had a Colt Defender with GR on it and it was good for CC. So I decided to put em on standard 1911's...one reason is my aged eyes could see them better than open sights. However, I dont CC full size
and only use them for stationary plinking (can't call my poor shooting "target shooting"). Found I could shoot more accurate with open sights and with one of those little
diopter? thing with tiny hole u stick on your glasses. Had forgot I had them til this subject came up the other day. So, Yes, I have 2 and they are for sale: $40 each, shipped. I got em from Brownells and they cost right much more, but if you find them cheaper, shipped, let me know. Email direct: [email protected]

There are many different versions of ghost ring sights out there. The comcept is the you shoot with both eyes open. That way you can see the target and your sights at the same time. A lot of research has been done in the last few years resulting in some new variations. Here are a few.

In a concealed carry situation and the SHT hits the fan, you are usualy in a close quarters distance. 5 to 25 feet is where most occurances happen. Here is where these sights have the best results. Quick target accusition and remember your eyes, both open, become fixed on the assailant. You unconsience mind will take over in a millisecond. Here is where the any sight that allows good target view is important.

Then there is a whole other field of rapid engaugement target sights. Most of these do not have tritium or night site versions.

There are many more.

TDR911,
Thanks for the rundown, makes sense. I'll be using that logic on my new hunting pistol and get it for that if made? Lots of stuff you put up:)

ulflyer,
Also thanks for the response, I might try one on a pistol, think it will be the new DE I am getting...Regards

Ghost rings on my HK91 worked well. On pistols, IIRC, a gun writer (I've read two dozen mags, lately, no certain reference) thought they would work in a 1/2 ring configuration.

I also saw the Steyr triangular sights, Heine straight 8, and some express sights now out. It seems there are a lot of ways to go about it, it may come down to how they carry, rather than any incremental improvement. On a combat handgun at less than 21 feet, quick acquistion seems more important - and a rear sight that obscures the target is not so good, IMHO.

Loved them on the HK, I'm leaning to Steyr Triangular on carry guns.
