I am unable to fully depress the grip safety on my Springfield 1911 GI model when having my thumb (properly) on top of the thumb safety. I would appreciate your thoughts on a resolution of the problem. I do not wish to install a beavertail on this particular gun. My thoughts are to try and relieve material from underneath the grip safety or to install a Gunsite or Wilson Combat low mount thumb safety. Do any of you folks suffer from the same problem and how have you resolved the issue? I posted this topic on another board was not yet getting any information on dealing with the issue at hand.
Thanks,

Over or under the thub safety as being "proper" is debateable. If its your chosen method, I'd say that a low mount thumb may be your best best, just make sure that you understand how to fit (if you don't already). You could also look to see if anyone makes that duckbill grip safety with I think they call it a memory pad or something like that. Its one that has a raised area at the lower end of the GS. But you may only find a beavertail with that pad and not the GI duckbill style.

Perhaps you could add a pad on the lower surface of the grip safety like comes on most Beaver-tails. Sort of a beaver-tail release pad without the beavertail?

It is designed to provide a more positive release with less then perfect grip or hand size.

Heres an old THR thread where someone did it with black epoxy.

Also, it would be no trick at all for a gunsmith to make a memory pad and silver solder it to your existing GI safety.

rc,
That may be an amenable solution; the type of creative influence I desired. I shall go look to see if I have an appropriate material to use in fashioning a palm swell for my GI grip safety. Thanks

Since my mind is engaged now I wonder if I could peen the trigger block arm to lenghten it and that would solve my problem with no cosmetic change?

Peening to lengthen the arm would have no effect on when it disengaged.

If it is the correct length and properly fitted now, it wouldn't even work then.
