Well, my .303 Gibbs used the barreled action of the #4 L.E. for the conversion, and while the rear apeture was nice the problem was the way Gibbs set up the front-sight unit and FH.

Mine was (poorly) pinned on and after about 50-rds that pin sheared off from the vibration and concussive muzzle blasts, and launched the entire front-sight & FH unit down range with the next round.

The local 'smith laughed at the Gibb's set-up, but was able to get the FS/FH unit pinned back on.
I didn't find it funny at all, so I sold it.

On your Gibbs, the FS/FH unit looks to be the same as mine (pinned on), but maybe over time you'll have better luck and yours will hold up to sustained firing ... :scrutiny:

ZGunner: A retired friend who is quite experienced with milsurps really likes his Gibbs "Jungle". All ninety five of his guns are milsurps.

You might want to consider the Spanish FR8 (not to be confused with the much weaker FR7), built on a Spanish 8mm Mauser action. Three of the FR8's rear sight positions are apertures. It's such a coincidence (?) when comparing the basic features of the Ruger Gunsite rifle with the FR8 and Enfield #5, if we exclude the new, plastic Ruger's larger mag and scope rail.

Research shows that the FR8's action is much stronger than described by commonly-accepted hearsay, repeated as gospel, and the FR8 should be able to use modern comm. .308 ammo. A field gauge can help.
For my actual Enfield #5 Jungles and Spanish FR8s, the 1" 'rubber' slip on pad seems to make recoil similar to that of the Yugo Mauser.

Sitting mostly upright while holding the arm in a bit of a chicken wing reduces recoil even more to an acceptable level.

FYI the rubber slip-on recoil pad for the French MAS 36 and 49/56 rifles fits a No. 5 (Jungle Carbine) very nicely. You just have to cut a little slit for the sling attachment thingy (can't call ity a swivel, can you?). They're still pretty easy to find.
