My 10 year old nephew is in love with guns. I took him to his first range outing this year. I'd like to get him something gun related for Christmas, but can't actually get him a gun quite yet. Any ideas? A book maybe?

A Ruger 10/22, or Henry Golden Boy.
Is there any particular reason you cannot get him a gun, besides finances.
If not, an air pistol, rifle, or BB gun.
Or maybe a nice Case knife (with CV blades)

+1 on the 10/22. If you can't actually give it to him (and assuming you like spending a good amount of time with the kid), you tell him that it's his, but Uncle Train is going to keep it in the safe and he can use it when you all go target shooting.

He'll want to come see you every weekend. :)

-T.

EDIT: I wanted to add that, for my part, 10 is in no way to young for a .22 rifle. It's the perfect age. I implore you to stay away from BB guns or air rifles. The real thing will teach real responsibility.

10yo...Hmmmmm I was actually thinking an airsoft gun, they are very inexpensive and pretty relistic (good for learning safe gun handling) and they hurt ALOT if you get the co2 or green gas pistols (usually over 400fps) and the ammo is CHEAP... I actually love airsoft and have a $270 M16 style rifle that is very accurate and I love to shoot it in the backyard just as much as my son does:p it is VERY accurate and can switch from semi to auto just like a real M16.

Just an Idea...

I let my 9yr old pick out his own 22 for Christmas this year. He chose the Mossberg 702. It stays in my safe but it is his to clean.

if it can't be a gun, maybe you can find a book aimed for kids about guns. i would check 4-H websites and the NRA (like a pony club manual 'exsept for guns not horses)
or a book that discusses diffrent types of guns with lots of pictures.
or you could make a little card for "# range days with uncle", like a gift certificate.

Jr. NRA membership or other org that offers a magazine he might like.

Or, not gun related per say--subscription to National Geographic if his household doesn't receive it. They've come back around to a better stance on hunting and shooting of late.

That National Geographic will come in handy for him in a few years, too! (Just kidding, but all the old farts know what I mean)

Gun books would be cool. I know I spent hours in them. I like the Standard Catalog of Firearms, tons of pictures and notes.
An NRA membership, w/magazine subscription.
Homemade "Coupons" for range time w/Uncle Train.

Airgun? My parents don't like guns, but surprisingly enough they bought both me and my younger brother BB guns when we were young. We loved them. I bet your nephew will too.

Giving him his own safety (eye/ear/whatever protection) equipment sounds like a cool idea. If you could get away with a pellet gun, I'd say go for it. Heck, I've got one that I let my nephew go out target-shooting with, and it's a pretty fun gun -- a Crosman 357W with a 6" barrel. It's a 10-shot revolver and surprisingly weighty. The only warning I will give you is that gas-powered guns and cold climates makes for poor shootin'.
Oh, and Venkman, I rather liked the "free visit to range" idea.

Oh, you could get him a subscription to Guns and Ammo, or something like Field and Stream; I read F&S a lot as a kid. Mostly for the guns.

The range gear sounds like a great idea. His parents don't own guns so I can't really give him his own just yet, they'd freak out. I did get a .22 Marlin more or less just to teach him to shoot. I keep it at my house, though.

WaltonS. has a great idea -- shooting safety gear is great as a gift. I gave our nephews universal cleaning kits one year also.

Neo, it wasn't really my idea; I was merely agreeing with earplug. Though, t he cleaning kits ain't a bad idea either.
