Learned that one of my cousin's son's is into shooting. We have a secret Santa theme in the sub $50 range. He'd mentioned ammo for his .223 Rem and I suspect he's probably got the basics covered. I'd like to find something related but not sure what AR-15 type shooters would like. In similar general gifts that shooters may like as well.

Input?

I agree
I don’t understand the question as it implies he wants ammo. But to help OP out here are a few thoughts.
Get him ammo. ARs eat ammo. So it’s always appreciated.

If OP is opposed to buying him ammo, then get him some magazines. One can never have enough AR mags.

A gift certificate is pretty thoughtless but who wouldn’t want a $50 one to JoeBobs, MidwayUSA, Cabela’s or such.

As a reloaded I’d like bullets, or primers, but OP would need to see if the young man reloads. With the THR discount, $50 could be well spent at RMR Bullets.

Books are always nice. As are tools. The BevBlock is nice not only for assembling ARs but for holding them for service and cleaning. In fact I highly recommend this as an alternative to ammo if going the alternative route.

Finally a brass catcher is a nice thing to have. Even if he doesn’t reload, it could help him not have to pick up his brass. Many of us believe in keeping shooting spaces cleaner then we got there. Best case he starts saving brass to reload. Worse he gives to someone to reload. And I’m all for recycling!

Got the ammo area, I'm hoping for suggestions that aren't necessarily consumables. Like the books and tools, the BevBlock is a great idea!

Glad I could help.
After you give it to him, please let us know what you got him and how he likes it.

  • A gift card branded by one of the major issuers (Visa, Mastercard, etc.)
  • A gift card to a local sporting goods store.
  • Or, the universal gift; cash.
Long ago, my family went through a spell where every gift that was given was somehow "wrong". It was the wrong size, the wrong color, the wrong brand, whatever. I started giving people cash. It ended the squabbling. My wife still insists that I pick out a gift for her to show her I really am paying attention, but everyone else gets small pieces of green paper; ahead of the holiday if I can, on the holiday so you can hit the after-holiday sales otherwise.

AR tools if he is really into it and if he might want to build one himself one day . If he has is own range , some steel targets . Magazines and ammo are never a bad idea . Also cleaning solvents & lubricants would be used .

Cash. Ammo. Mags.

I’d prefer cash, but if a gift is necessary some range ammo is good, or some “good” ammo to try...premium varmint ammo, heavy BTHP, etc.

GOOD hearing protection!
Lots of different kinds of targets, not necessarily paper either.

I just got some Howard Leight electronic ear muffs and they are great. That would be my suggestion. It's something you can use every time you go to the range.

I recently gave my sister in law a set of these. She loves them. You can connect to music player with aux cord.

I'll third the Howard Leight electronic muffs. You don't have to take them off and on like regular muffs because you can hear people talk with them on. They would be appreciated by anyone who hasn't used electronic muffs.

Steel mil spec ammo cans. If he does not use them to store ammo, he can put together an emergency kit for his vehicle. They have 100's of uses.

Not AR-related, but what guy doesn't like a decent knife or solid flashlight? There are some nice ones around that price range in places like Bass Pro, Cabela's, etc.

Lots of great suggestions in this thread. I'm gonna have to cut and paste this whole thread and send it to my wife and kids ...

Gun cleaning supplies, mags, tools, knives, flashlights, hearing protection, quality targets, gift cards, PREMIUM ammo, etc...

And OP, what's his favorite brands/firearms makers? How about some cool labeled apparel -- tee shirts, caps, jackets?
