Hi, all. I am big on family traditions and have worked hard to make shooting a tradition in my own family. One of the things I have enjoyed is buying special guns for my daughter, now 21. Her first handgun, a S&W Model 64 2-inch, was an 18th birthday present. She will graduate college in a year and I am having a special 1911 built for her as a graduation gift. We shoot IDPA matches together and we always shoot 1911s in 45ACP so I know she will cherish this graduation present. Deciding how to set the gun up is so much fun! More fun than getting a new gun for myself actually.

Anybody else enjoy buying guns for their kids?

I got my very first rifle as a gift from my Grandpa on my 14th and my first pistol for high school graduation from my dad. I don't have kids yet, but I hope that when I do, they enjoy firearms as much as I do!

Be carefull when you decide to pass them on. My father gave me and my two brothers each a stainless Colt 1911 in .45 as a coming of age gift (read finally moved out of their house). Though my older brother and myself love and care for our gifts my younger brother decided that pawning his .45 to get dope money was a better idea.

I'm still fairly young (30) but due to strange heart issues im probably not gonna be around long enough to see my two little boys hit their late teens, early twenties. So I've already lined up what weapons I'm giving to my boys and carefully instructed my wife on the when, why and how of passing them on for me.

As a son and grandson, the idea of getting a commemorative .45 is quite a nice thought indeed. I would cherish something like that forever. Alas I've never gotten a firearm as a gift. I suggest maybe you take her out for a range-date to present her with her brand new handgun, which I'm sure you'll have set up perfectly for her. Then she'll get to try it out right away! Just remember lots of ammo.

Looks like some are lucky in the fact your kids/gran kids enjoy the sport and owner-ship of weapons.
My oldest granson could care less about either. In fact none of the gran kids are involved. All my stuff is going to my brother. He respects the tradition of gun ownership (collecting) so I know all will find a good home.

I bought a Colt 1991 for my son the week he was born. I took the grip off and wrote a note for him. Function checked it, then cleaned it, oiled it and sealed it back up. He'll get it when he's ready....aged to perfection. ;)

My daughter is a bit young yet, but I have plans.

My father bought me my first handgun when I turned 21 and I just had the pleasure to buy him his first handgun for his birthday.

My buddy's son is the only nine year old I know who has "his" own Browning 1919. In dad's safe, of course.

I believe gifting is a good idea. I have gifted my son a Glock17 G4 9mm. Until he is 21, I have control of it. But as far as shooting, care, and maintenance goes it is his.

Well.... at 21 I'd hardly call her a "kid" or "child".... :D When I read the title I imagined some father buying their 12 year old a Magnum .44 or something.... :D

With the family time you've both shared so far at shooting events I have no doubt at all that it will be received most lovingly and mean a lot to her.

I bought my first handgun at 10...well I saved my work money and my Mom technically bought it...I will buy my sons guns if they want them at 12 or so depending on how they are then.

I bought a Glock 19 for my daughter's birthday/college graduation. Right now its locked in the safe until after she completes a safety class for her CHP. Even though I taught her a lot about shooting/firearms, I still want her to take and pass the class : partly to appease her mother :) She is engaged now (to a LEO) and I've already told her that when the first grandchild is born that the little one will have a 22lr sitting in the safe for him/her until they are old enough to shoot it (probably my old Itaca 49 which I got some 40+ years ago).

She also knows that in my will I'm leaving her & my oldest nephew the bulk of my small collection of firearms. I've designated specific ones I want each to have and the rest they split by value with the daughter getting first choice.

Cheers
Chris

I fully plan on teaching my boys shooting. I can imagine this will, no doubt, result in me purchasing them things to shoot.

About 90% of the "stuff" I buy for collecting, etc, is done so with them in mind. One of these days I hope they will be able to appreciate all the little things i've collected for them.

My son just turned 1 and i've already fixed up a N.E.F. 20 ga (My first shotgun) with an ATI collasible stock and tactical forearm. also plan to given him my old marlin 22r (my first rifle) as starters until he gets old enough for the real meat and potatoes.

The beauty about gifting guns to children is a perfect excuse to the wife to buy more guns. lol

When she was about 11 years old, my daughter saw a photo of a nickel S&W model 15 and blurted out "that is the most beautiful gun I ever saw!". I bought this one for her about 6 months later. I'm not sure when she'll get it, but probably soon. She turns 16 in a few months. The presentation case has a brass plaque with her name on it.
