I went to high school in the early 70's in Massachusetts (of all places.) We had co-ed gym classes, with 2 or 3 choices of different classes we could take each semester. One was basic self defense. They taught arm twists, palm of the hand under the nose, stomp on the in steep, things like that. Also what common objects can be used a weapons; rat tail comb handle, broken bottle (!), even a tightly rolled up magazine jabbed in the face like a billy club. The basic tactics the gym teachers taught were get hit the attacker hard someplace that hurts, then run as fast as you can towards other people, screaming as loud as you can. Sounds similar to what the girl in this story did.Great story, but I have a hard time believing that schools today would teach people to look around them for weapons.
