It is a great way to meet new friends at the range. It is loud and everybody want's to know what you are shooting. Patrick

just use the excuse like i did i dont have a _______________ insert gun maker here and need one thats how i bought my 357 sig in a sig :)

A friend of mine does surveillance, having to spend a LOT of time in a van and on the road. He has gone to the .357 Sig specifically due to issues of sheet metal and glass penetration. For those of us in similar circumstances, it does make some sense. Plus, the drop in caliber change between .40 S&W and .357 Sig is kind of nice.

FWIW,

emc

Because the Air Marshalls carry it in their SIG 229s, which makes it the preferred terrorist killer of well informed Americans nationwide.

Except for those Americans who are informed that no Sky Marshall has ever shot, much less killed, any terrorist (or anyone else) on a plane in the entire agencies history ;)

Although, I respect the powerful .357 SIG chambering a lot...

...I personally wouldn't want one because that power makes the .357 SIG rather abusive to the pistol chambering it. In comparison to the 9 mm x 19 Parabellum, the longevity of a similar gun in .357 SIG seems to be reduced appreciably. A Glock 17 or 19 almost lasts forever whereas the similar G31 or 32 are known to have failed/broken after only a couple of thousand rounds. Obviously, the pounding the gun receives from the .357 SIG is a lot harder.

I prefer to train a lot with my self-defense guns and I'd like to avoid my guns or a major components to break in the moment of truth as much as I can. Hence, my preference for the 9 mm Luger and .45 ACP rounds. Cost of training ammunition is another factor.

I'd give the .357 SIG an slight edge in stopping power in comparison to aforesaid calibers (9 mm and .45), though.

Alan, you seem to be well set with the more common calibers, so if you feel you want absolutely want a .357 SIG, don't hesitate. The .357 SIG just isn't for me. If I want .357 power I'd rather carry a revolver in .357 Magnum. I am quite confident you own at least one .357 revolver, too.

Best wishes!

If fridges, TV's and computers are part of our everyday life, then aren't we in similar circumstances? The potential for shooting through barriers is very real. The VA state police selected this caliber for this reason.

I have a 357 Sig and like it because it's pretty potent and comes in a nice compact package (XD 357). I have many other calibers and like them as much or better. The 357 Sig has a fun factor, but I admit that I don't carry it as often as my 10mm's or my .45's. I do like it more than my 9mm's (one of which is a similar XD9). I bought mine just to have one, but I do enjoy shooting more than I thought I would :)

I have bought the XD-357 and the conversion barrel for a 40. I love both and the ability to swap ammo that easily.

I have a good friend who has an auto wrecking yard/tow truck service. He's been itching to shoot my P229 in 357sig; I'll take the digicam and grab some images of what it'll do to various body panels/doors/engine blocks at a safe distance.

I have a feeling we'll all be impressed.

Texas DPS officers I've discussed the round with anecdotally report it to be 'like a lightning bolt' as far as results. We'll see.

As for me, I'm convinced. I like it. I had no idea when I got mine, but after a lot of rounds downrange and lots of targets perforated, it's fast, loud, accurate, and reliable.

Rabbit.

Despite the internet myths, the 357 SIG does no better in the FBI tests (including intermediate barriers) than the 9x19.

The "like a lightning bolt" phrase was actually coined by Ayoob in a gunrag--not by the TX DPS. The DPS is not as universally enthralled by the 357 SIG as the gunrags and internet would have you believe--particularly the troopers with a great deal of "gun savvy."

Basically, the best 357 SIG ammunition performs no better (and is no more effective in actual LE use) than the best 9x19. The are both .36 calibre, and the rather small difference in velocity/energy is not enough to make a difference. The 357 SIG is a good self-defence/LE round, and if you want to carry it, more power to you, but it offers no advantage in effectiveness over the best 9x19 rounds.
