Im currently on a LR 308 build off a savage action. So far, its going swell except for the limited time I have to work on it. Ive been pondering about the glass bedding.

Im going to use Devcon 10110 to pillar bed the action to the DBM, and then glass bed both components as well to get a rock solid fit. But how far up the barrel do I go? Ive heard BR shooters will bed the first inch or so to provide stability and reduce stress on the action. Ive seen others that only bedded to the barrel.

I am going for accuracy, so I want to do what will perform the best. Of course I want to not worry about deflection in the action either.

Im using a 26 inch varmint S7 varmint barrel from Shelien which will be important considering weight on the action. Ill also be using a steel one piece picatinny base that I assume will stiffen up the action a little. I plan on bedding the base as well due to intolerances in the action. (I suppose its possible I could have a very straight action, but usually one side of the base raises up)

Thank you!

Hi. Out from the receiver to under the chamber area only. Usually about 2" or so. Some rifles like a free floated barrel. Some do not. Only way to find out if yours does is to try it. Not a big deal to put a pressure point in if it needs it. About an inch in from the end of the forestock with a dab of bedding material.

I usually bed the length of the chamber then try the gun out. At some point I loosen the action and insert some folded business cards at the forend as a pressure point to see if the barrel likes it or not. If it does I'll bed in a pressure point. I had a Win 52 Pre-A that LOVED a pressure point on the barrel. That action was really only supported by one action screw though.

Sounds like bedding the chamber area is a go. I may try that card trick as well. No reason not too and who knows, it could help...:)
