My new rifle project is nearly complete. Just waiting on the stock, and then I need glass. That's where I'm having fits trying to decide what to get.

The rifle is a Remington 700 in 223 with the 1:9 twist 20" heavy barrel. For the most part this thing's going to be punching paper at 100-250 yards. Mostly shooting from a picnic table with a bipod.

If possible I'm trying to keep the cost around $400. I've been looking at a Nikon Prostaff 5 3.5-14x50 as well as a couple of the Leupold VX-II series, 3-9x40 and 3-9x50.

I also have another option. I've got a Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42 that's currently on my little CZ 455 Varmint 22/17 cal. I could stick that one on the Remington and pick up something else for the CZ.

I'm horrible at picking out scopes and I'm at my wits end. I've read so much over the last week that everything starting to sound the same.

A couple people have also told me to just save my money for now because the $400 range is going to get me a higher end mediocre scope but if I can save another couple hundred bucks I can get something much better.:banghead:

I have three Remington 700s, a VSF (Varmint Synthetic Fluted) .223 and a VLS (Varmint Laminate Stock) .243; both barrels are 26". The 3rd is a 700 BDL.270 with 22" barrel. On my .223 I have a Bushnell 4-16X Elite 4200 with side focus and on the .243 I have a Leupold VX III 4.5-14X AO. The Bushnell fits your budget; the Leupold does not. There is a Bushnell Outlet near me that offers 40% discount off MSRP, with my Kansas State Rifle Assn membership.. So the Bushnell was under $350, a really good deal. The Leupold is nice, but, to me, not worth the price difference. The Bushnell is a very good scope. I've shot 100s of rounds while hunting prairie dogs and my .223 in my most accurate centerfire rifle. Another consideration might be a Burris Fullfiield II 4-12X. I put one on my .270 and heart-shot a nice deer last year. It is an excellent scope for a very modest price. Again I had a connection that got it for $225, but you can still get it for under $300. For the money it is one of my best scopes. I have several Leupolds, but recently switched to Bushnell because I can get the higher magnification scopes for less than half the price of the
Leupold equivalent. PM me if you have more questions. Good luck.

I got to shoot a Rem 700 topped with a SWFA SS 3-15x42. It was much better than my Leupold VX-I and Bushnell Elite Limited. Very, very nice scope for a $500 price tag; comparable to scopes costing more than twice the price. The next time samplelist.com has one I'm buying it. I would highly suggest looking into them.

I know Nikon makes some good stuff, but I've always heard their customer service/warranty sucks to deal with, which is one reason why I've always gone with Leupold and Bushnell's Elite series (who both have great CS, as well as great products).
Also as stated above, the Burris Fullfield line is a pretty nice bang for the buck, you probably can't go wrong there either, if you're on a budget.
I can relate to the OP's tearing his hair out over all the info available (been there), but I would recommend keep on researching. There's a lot of very good glass around these days, at very good prices, but you gotta root 'em out, and tips from guys on forums is great for that.
Don't forget to check out the close-out/sale prices at Natchez, i've seen some doozies from those guys.
