In 1991, my dad gave me a Glock 17... one of the earliest ones. As you know, the early ones have no rail. Well, my dad died a few months ago.

Of course I'll never get rid of that pistol, but I wouldn't mind making it my home defense pistol... but I want light and laser and this is a first gen gun. I'd at least like a laser, even if I have to hold the flashlight in my hand. I'd prefer not to use the flashlight-at-the-bottom magazine accessory.

Any ideas?

ETA: something other than the crimson trace or lasermax systems.

Crimson Trace probably has a grip laser that would fit it.

You might be able to use one of their new triggerguard lights, too - probably worth just sending them an email asking what would fit your gen 1.

My condolences on your loss.

Look at laser max and crimpson trace for the laser

Well DUH! Yes of course. That is the first choice by far. What I failed to mention was that I was looking to see if there were any other options... just wasn't with-it enough to put it in my post. At one point I saw lasers that mounted on the front of the trigger guard without the aid of a rail. Anybody know if those are any good?

The lasers that mount to the triggerguard take up too much room inside the triggerguard. Usually, they require a separate step to activate the laser.

Regardless of what else might be available, I'd get the Crimson Trace laser and light as was mentioned in Post #3

My condolences. This add-on rail requires permanent alteration to the frame, I'm assuming at least two holes to drill, don't know if you want to go that route since your dad gave it to you...

Note: I have not used this rail. I don't know how it will effect holster fit, or if you'll even be able to find a quality holster to fit the pistol with the light attached. I spotted it sometime today while at the brownells site looking for nothing specific.

I dislike anything triggergaurd mounted because, as David E said, they take up too much room inside the triggerguard.

I would consider another pistol for HD, one with a rail, and no sentimental value. If used in a HD shooting, you may not see it for a very long time and it may get beat up while in the evidence room.

If you really want to mount tacticool gear to your gun then I would recommend getting a 3rd Gen frame from GB
They usually run $150-$200. Glock will also sell you one for $150ish I think.
