I'm not that familiar with Glocks but I'm looking into getting one of their 9mm models. I noticed they have 2 popular models: 17 & 19. For those of you that have tried both, which do you prefer & why?

Crazy Coot:

The 17 is the "full size" and the 19 is the "slightly smaller" size. Neither fits my hand particularly well, but both are superb handguns, very reliable, and tough as a Estwing steel hammer.

The 17 holds 17 rounds (in a free state, that is) and the 19 holds 15 rounds.

Choosing between the two? I would lean towards the 19 as a CCW pistol, and the 17 as a HD pistol. Either would serve well in either role. Neither is particularly big nor particularly heavy.

the 19, it is the gild standard, it is a little shorter overall lenght, it is easier to conceal than the glock 17. either way you will be well served but the 19 is the choice i would take.

I have shot the Glock 22, 23, 17, and 19. out of all of them I like the 19 best. It is just the right size for general knock-about use (not too big, not too small) and my model 19 is the most accurate Glock I have ever shot. I know it's heresy but the extra 2 shots in the model 17 mean very little to me.

Since you don't say for what purpose you will be using your Glock, it is kind of hard to give a firm answer, but I'll try.

I own, carry, compete with, shoot and like both the G17 and the G19. Ultimately, you can't go wrong with either one.

Their dimensions:

Glock 17:

Length: 7.32"
Height: 5.43"
Width: 1.18"
Weight: 24.79 oz.

Glock 19:

Length: 6.85"
Height:5.00"
Width: 1.18"
Weight: 23.45 oz.

Given that the G17 is the same width as the G19 and is only 0.43" taller, 0.47" longer and weighs just a paltry 1.34 ounces more than the G19 while providing two more rounds of 9mm ammunition, a longer grip surface and a sight radius that is 0.47" longer than the G19, I prefer the G17 over the G19 and carry it the vast majority of the time because I find the differences in their dimensions to be insignificant to me when I carry.

The longer grip of the G17 just feels more comfortable in my hands and having the 0.47" longer barrel on the G17 to squeeze out that last little bit of velocity is just icing on the cake so I carry the G17.

If you can get away with the concealing the little bit of extra length in both dimensions (if this gun will be used for that purpose) I would encourage you to go for the G17. On the other hand, you might be constrained to the G19 due to those factors.

If, however, it is to be used simply for recreational purposes, then either will suffice of course, although the G17 does offer the advantage of an increased sight radius which helps (at least in theory :)) to increase one's accuracy.

Your call. :D

Love the Glock 19

I'm a 1911 guy who recently bought a Glock 19. I am very happy with it: after 500 rounds I've had zero failures. It's accurate, easy to maintain, exceedingly reliable, and light weight.

Get a G19. You'll be very happy you did.

Both the 17 and 19 are so common you should be able to handle both. I have small/medium hands and the 19 feels like a full-size gun to me - a longer grip wouldn't add anything, and might make the gun feel a bit awkward.

I'm with gun slinger.

I've howled repeatedly that comfort is relative, and you should carry the gun you shoot best, REGARDLESS OF SIZE. Generally speaking, full-size guns have a better sight radius, more weight to absorb recoil, and the extra two rounds. (Though I'm not going to break a tie over two rounds either.) I think that the gun industry and magazines are in an effort to convince us we need a different gun for every niche of our lives. I carried a full-size Glock 22 for years. I carry a full-size 1911 now.

HAVING SAID THAT, As some others have said in here, they really do shoot the 19 better. I've shot one, but I don't remember it being that big of a difference. Go to a rental range, try both. If one really feels better to you, get it.

I while back I was in the same situation as you are now. I tried both and couldn't tell any meaningful difference, so I bought the 19 for easier carry. You can't really go wrong with either.

I have a Gen 1 Glock 19 and IMO its the "right" sized pistol with a combination of good accuracy, conceal ability and hi capacity. I prefer the grip w/o finger grooves so other than a set of night sights and 2 Glock upgrades it remains stock. If you are looking for a gun that will likely not be carried then either will do but I've never regretted choosing the 19.

A few months ago I was asking myself this same question. I ended up going with the G17 just because I already had a conversion kit for it. But now that I am getting into concealed carry I wish I had went with the G19. With the G19 you loose very little in ballistic performance and mag cap. Yet gain a lot in concealability. If you want an all around HDW and CCW then I would go with the G19.

I carry [among other things] a Glock 19 as a CCW gun. I'm not one of those people who complains about size and weight of a reasonable sized pistol. I can carry the thing all day long with little discomfort.

I've also got a .40S&W Glock 22, which is the same size as the Glock 17. It'd be a little less comfortable to carry, but no more so than the Norinco M1911 that I sometimes carry.

I have both. I expected the G17 to be easier to shoot and more accurate, but that turned out not to be the case. I can shoot the G19 faster and with better accuracy. From what I've heard, this is pretty typical.

When the time came to qualify as Expert for IDPA, I took the G19.
I made it easily.

If I only could own one handgun, it would probably have to be a G19. If I could only own two handgus, they would probably have to ge a G17 and a G26. Fortunately, this isn't the case and I am able to own quite a few different handguns - only one, however, is a Glock. My Glock happens to be a G26 and it is my preferred choice for concealed carry personal defense. It is not the "best" handgun I own, it just happens to be the best handgun that I own for its intended purpose.

Get the Compact G19. Full size pistols have longer barrels increasing accuracy and power but not enough to make a difference. I think compact pistols get more use overall.

I'd vote for the 19 as a better all around pistol.

The agency I worked for authorized the 17, 19, and 26. I carried a 19 and liked it. I got a 26 and there was so little size difference (with a +2 mag on the 26 the grip was the same size as a 19) I traded in the 19 for a 17 (not that much bigger than a 19 but significantly larger than a 26).

If you intend on getting one Glock 9 I'd say the 19. If you think you're going to buy another get the 17 and then the 26.

If you wind up with all 3 that's not bad either but kind of redundant.

If you're CCWing, you get the Glock 26. I have a G34 which is like the 17 with a longer barrel. If you're not CCWing, get the bigger gun.

Have you had a problem with your Hand-all loosening up so that it moves on the gun? I had that problem with my Glock 22 and eventually took it off.

The Glock 17 size is a "Duty Pistol". Think of a uniformed Police Officer and open carry.

This makes a good "range" or target gun, but one that is more difficult to conceal. Back when the Glock 19 came out I knew a few uniformed LEO's that traded the 17 in for the 19. The reasons given were, ""it's easier to carry off duty," "it's quicker to draw from a holster due to it's shorter barrel," "I don't have to buy another gun," and the best one, "the shorter barrel and grip don't hurt me as much when I'm sitting in the car.""

I personally like the Glock 19, and think it's the best one they make. That's not to say that the 17 isn't a good gun, I just find the 19 to be a good "compromise" between all the attributes we look for in a defensive pistol. Try them both and decide what you are going to use it for. If it's for concealed carry I'd lean towards the 19. If it's for the Range, the 17. If it's for home defense, IMHO, it's a "toss up".

Not a single problem. I had to warm up the Hand-all with warm water to get it on the pistol grip. I have them on both of my G-19s. Love them......
:D

A very small dose of hairspray under the Handall will cure this issue and prevent it from moving or sliding around.
