I am considering trying a Glock 34 or 17 with MOS and a Trijicon RMR, but have a few concerns.

Does a slide mounted optic hold its zero well?

Is it durable? Seems like the recoil plus getting dinged with brass might result in a short lifespan.

Will a G34 with that set up be any more accurate than a 17 with that set up?

With my eyes getting older, a red dot on a pistol might help me compensate some... but not if it’s not going to be a durable package that holds zero.

I've been running an RMR type 1 on my M&P CORE for about 4 years. Battery lasted 3 years. Screws have worked loose 2x. That makes you lose zero. I had to shim the battery 2x. The new type 2 RMR are supposedly fixed in that regard. Zero seems ok until it isn't. I've had to readjust even when the screws were tight, but that may also have had to do with changing ammo. I just shoot a few rounds before a match and if they go where I aim them, I figure I'm good.

I have a Glock 40 10mm and a Glock 34 both mos with Burris Fastfire !!! . A lot of rounds through both and no problems and a big help to these 72 year old eyes.

The RMR's seem to do pretty well in that role. I'm strictly irons on handguns, but it seems like my 34 is a nicer shooter than my 17's or any 17 I have ever been issued.

The 34 will be no more accurate. I have a 35 and it is no more accurate than my 19 or my 29. It is strictly a match gun and a range toy, but the reduced flip and recoil is somewhat noticeable.

From what I've researched with the red dot sights, the Trijicon RMR is the gold standard. And it better be for over $400.

There are cheaper options in the $200 to $300 range that are very, very nice. I went with the Burris Fastfire III for $215 or so. I've only had it less than a week, but when researching, I found almost zero issues reported with them.

Heck, I bought a $50 Chinese red dot off of Amazon and put it on my G29 in a dovetail mount and carried it for months in the Idaho woods with no issues. It was abused and subjected to all kinds of horrors and never failed or lost zero.

In the accuracy department, the G34 advantage over the G17 is in sight radius with iron sights. When the RMR is used, the sight radius advantage is gone. I'd expect equal accuracy with an RMR on both.
