wondering if it is easy to install this yourself, or should I just take it to a gunsmith.

Easy Diy

Not sure how the book says to install a new one. BUT. I have removed mine using a typical M-16 pick to roll the spring out of the mag catch notch. You need something with a right hand hook to remove it and a left hand hook to put it back in. Either that or the other way around. Is easiest that way, or you could try a very small screwdriver. Once the spring is lifted from the mag catch, the catch simply falls out.

Gunflask, someone accustomed to tinkering with firearms shouldn't find it too hard a job but it's a bit tricky to remove and install a Glock magazine catch. A gunsmith or Glock armorer probably won't charge more than a few dollars to do it and could do it while you wait.

Extended slide release; as in sticking out even further than
the factory plastic button?
I used a cut-off wheel and a dremel tool to buzz the slide
release on my glock 21 flush with the grip frame. I had the
magazine fall at my feet several times due to the slide release
getting pushed and the magazine released.
It is not hard to release now; just push firmly. The magazine
has not parted company with the pistol anymore either.

very easy to change out with a fine screwdriver

good for a range/competition gun

not recommended for CCW or personal defense - too easy to accidentally eject the mag

I round the corners of an extended magazine release and remove a small amount from the end. When finished it is between the length of ext. and standard, and is round and has no rough edges. It works great in all holsters including several that are in duty holsters and does not release mags without your assistance.

JBP55, do you just use a Dremel and/or file to do that? I find that the square shape of most Glock mag releases can be a bit uncomfortable, especially after extended practice sessions. I've considered doing something similar but never actually tried it.

Aged In Oak, You can remove and file or sandpaper or use sandpaper with mag release in frame. No dremel needed. You can remove, contour and install in a matter of minutes.
