The shop down the road has a used Glock 20 and I would like to know what generation it is. I have no idea how to ID one generation from the other. Is there any generation that is preferred? What are some signs to look for to tell me to pass it up? I am realtively new to pistols and not sure how to tell if its a keeper or not. Thanks for your help, Lee.

P.S> I am planning on using it hunting, want to install a 3.5# connector and a 6" LW barrel. I already have a G23 and am pretty familiar with it and shoot it well.

Gen 1 has smooth grip with no finger grooves
Gen 2 has a textured grip, no grooves
Gen 3 has finger groove, and normaly a light rail
Gen 4 is... well i dont know. but its not gen 1, 2 or 3 ;)

Awesome, thank you very much. Now i have to go and check it out. Anything internal i should look at? I dont want to buy an old worn out gun.

Make sure the serial numbers on the barrel, slide and frame match...if they don't you can tell it was sent to the factory.

Check the rifling and make sure the trigger is smooth when dry firing.

Great choice!

No they're all the same. Don't think that Glock ever made a Gen 1 10MM.
