I just bought it a couple days ago and was unpleased with the sharpness of the blade so I broke out my spider co sharping kit and it is dulling it:confused: . I have never ran into this before with any other of my knives any info would be appreciated

I once had that experience with an Ontario KaBar. The blade had been previously "sharpened" by a fellow with some sort of belt-sander arrangement. I dont' know what it was, I was a very young noobie at the time.

I also tried to sharpen someone's cheap boot knife with a diamond hone, but with similar success.

Anyhoo, I think in all three cases, the blade's heat-treat might be off.

One of these knife-smiths will probably be along to correct me soon enough.

Could be the angle of the primary grind. If it's too steep, the Spyderco SharpMaker won't do much at all. They used to sell coarse diamond "Speed Sleeves" to quickly reprofile the edge, but I haven't seen those on the market for a LONG time. Instead, Spyderco will sell you some 204D Diamond Triangles to do the same job...for $100!

If you want a quality blade, it is usually best to avoid anything that is more of a promo item, i.e., anything with HK, Glock, Beretta, S&W on the scales. This is not true in all cases.

whats kind of funny is that the cheapo smiths sharpeners you get at wally world for 2 dollars and some change do a good job.

The angle of the existing blade is just different than the angle of the Sharpmaker, so you have to reprofile the blade to the Sharpmaker's angles. It's not a big deal.

I have those diamond sticks also - wouldn't be without them. They can be had much cheaper than $100 if you look around.

Small smith sharpeners form wallmart with one side having 2 ceramic interchangeable plates and the other side having 2 cylinder white poles, anybody know what angle that is?

My understanding is that the Glock G78 is the issue knife for the Austrian military. I would expect it to be no better or worse in quality and utility than our M4 bayonet.

@mike5123

I actualy bought one the other week, I seem to recall the angle being 23deg
