Does anyone know whether gloves are or aren't definitively allowed in IDPA? I'm talking basically about one fingerless glove on my strong hand. I've not seen anyone use one that I can remember.

Well, Jim, it's competition equipment in that I would use it in competition; but it's largely just because my hand gets beat up shooting ESR. Used to shoot SSR, but I'm trying to make a transition for the Carolina Cup, and while a few rounds don't bother me, a heavy day of practice or two full days of tournament shooting will. Since it's not specifically addressed in the rulebook, I'm basically just looking for any precedent or known rulings before I approach the MD with the question. I'm thinking of it more as a prophylactic than anything.

I remember this topic being addressed about a month or two ago. The answer was they are NOT allowed. Unfortunately I can't remember where I read it.

I don't see why using gloves would be a problem unless they were the competition only fingerless type. :)

once a year our club (usually in FEB) has a gloves match, where every shooter MUST wear gloves. fingerless gloves are NOT allowed nor are plastic or latex. The idea is to simulate a possible situation during cold months when you might wear gloves and have to use your CCW. I usually wear those stretchy women's knit gloves that can be picked up at K mart for $2 in tactical black of course.

This is however a completely different scenario than the one describes, and may go against the official IDPA rules, but we do it anyway.

I would say though that if the 625 beats you up so bad maybe you should download your rounds to the power floor.

The 625 Beats up your hand....???? I shoot a 625 in Idpa and do not understand how your hand gets beat up???? Now. I have very large hands... XL Size.

My right hand gets bit between the thumb and finger @ the web of my hand when using my non-beaver tail 1911.... I must wear a glove then...

In IDPA you can not use the gloves you mentioned. Now, during certain matches during the year, our club will require gloves/winter coats during the stage. But they are not the shooting gloves or mechanics gloves....

Well, it beats up my hands only if I grip it wrong. Shooting SSR (and shooting bunny fart loads in the 625 back when it was SSR), I got used to shooting with both thumbs up high--with the tip of my right (strong hand) thumb riding over the cylinder release and touching the back of the recoil shield; off hand thumb riding the frame beneath the cylnder.

This grip makes for a great DA trigger pull and fast pointing, but when you get the power factor up past 150 or so, the hump at the top of the handle starts biting into the joint of your strong-hand thumb pretty good. If I can't wear a glove, I'll just have to develop another, probably a more orthodox, revolver grip for ESR.

Thanks for the input and answers.

ChrisG....

Talking about strange holds, I grip with the right in a regular manor. My Left hand regrips the right with the left thumb on top of the right thumb. My left thumb, now cock the hammer and preps for single action firing. This is a trick that I learned while shooting single shot revolver. In this fashion, I'm very quick and acurate. "Go slow to go Fast" works in this fashion. Good time with better shots on target. This is mostly used on distant or highly acruate fire is needed on my 625.
