As many of you know i am a lil sideways around case seperation in my new saiga 223. It couldent be my reloading. could it. I have loaded zillions of rounds and only 1 case seperation on an sks shell was loaded maybe 6 times not going to load that one again.
Not sure if I am in the right fourm but have you used the go/no go head space insert and if so do i need both if its a go its a go and its my reloads and if the go gauge wont fit its a no go so if i have one why do i need the other what am i missing. Now remember its a cheap ak type rifle i dont expect to be match shooting but when in the hills i want to unload trouble free and worrie free.
and will these work for what i am looking for. I am still leaning towards but not stuck on over worked creased dinged brass as the seperation is at that point of the large ding this is the second reload with this brass and the first seperation,
Another question can the headspace change over a few hundred rounds.:banghead:

For chamber on firearms that the barrel is already installed, you should use a No-Go Length first, If the bolt fully closes on a no-go it may have excessive headspace, key word maybe. to be sure you now need to install the Field Length gauge if the bolt will fully close on a Field Length gauge, then the chamber is dangerously close to or longer than SAAMI specified Maximum. The Go length gages only tells you if the chanber will accept cartridges and is used mostly with barrel installations and rechanbering. As for headspace change over a few hundred rounds depends on how hot you get the barrel, if you make it glow red then anything is possible, but normally it takes a few thousand rounds to make much of a change.

The most important (assuming commercial rounds will chamber) is the NO-GO gauge. You DON'T want the bolt to close on that gauge or the chamber is too long.

But you shouldn't have to buy this gauge at all. Any competent gunsmith should check headspace for you for a very small fee.

BREAK BREAK....

1. Get the Hornady Headspace guage set, or the RCBS precision mic
2. Get several fired cases which have not yet been re-sized
3. Pull the Saiga bolt and remove the extractor/ejector so there is NOTHING that will give the least interference with closing
4. Measure the as-fired headspace on those un-resized cases
5. Using those cases, very gently try to close the bolt on them. If there is even the slightest resistance to closing you have established a starting point.
6. Starting w/ the sizing die a full turn out, start resizing the cases/turning the resizer in to where you either (a) see the headspace start to increase (it may actually lengthen as the case sides are squeezed in), or get smaller by 0.002".
7. See if the (slightly) sized case will chamber with NO resistance. If it will, use that measurement for sizing from now on.
8. If it won't chamber, continue to turn the sizing die in until the bolt will JUST close (no restance at all). turn the die in for another 0.002" and lock it.

So do you think i can find what i am looking for with with a no go gauge the rifle is new but it is a saiga and i dont want to put much $$ into it maybe I[ll just bring it to the shop.
Thanx

Trouble with that the cases are dented so bad no chance of getting them back in the rifle i guess i could disable the gas and fire a few.

Spend $25-$35 dollars and get the RCBS or Hornaday headspace gauge set/mic. With those in hand and some fired cases to adjust to, you are in control no matter what the rifle's headspace is.

TTThank YYYou

I was getting ready to give up on this. It had me doubting my reloading abilitys as i enjoy reloading for my son and his buddy's more then shooting
I am going to order th headspace gauge you mentioned and get this figured out. This IS the only real trouble i have had so i will keep you informed.
Again Thanx

Up date midway $41.26 headspace gauge set going to become a headspace expert Love my Son and his Buddy's and as thier reloader i need to make sure things are safe.
You guys ROCK
As of now since the ejected cases wont feed in the action going to compair factory ammo to my reloads and spent cases and see what i can see.
What i did end up getting is the lock and load any tips on that will help.
