I have a 3rd generation Glock 23 with night sights on layaway at my local gunshop. Getting it primarily for cc/sd because my monster FNP .45 is too much of a beast to conceal all oof the time (not that it can't be done mind you). But I've been looking at the SA xdm 3.8 40 or possibly a s&w 40 in either their m&p or personal defense lines? I need as best as possible some non-biase opinions here.

I had a Glock 21 & loved it but had to sell it due to unforeseen circumstances (the economy). Glock's reliable & I've shot the 23 & it's accurate. Keep in mind it's simple, to the point, & for nothing other than personal defense & concealed carry.

However I despise the takedown for Glocks & I'm really liking both Springfield's & S&W's safety & taketown configurations as opposed to the Glock? ANy advice/woes/pros/cons to suggest/consider before I buy this thing?

Summertime, I prefer the mini-Glocks (26,27,33). If I am wearing enough clothing to hide something bigger, I am likely to carry just about anything.

I recently carried around the XD-9 Service for awhile, then the XD-40 Service tucked in my belt (chamber-empty). Felt a bit bulky, but they were both reasonably comfortable.

I've had Glocks ,shot fine felt odd in my hand. The XDm felt great , I shoot it better. The XDm is a little harder to conceal but not much.

I just got a XDM 3.8 in .40cal and I love the way it shoots and feels. Will I be able to carry this gun concealed with a Crossbreed Supertuck?

i have an xd9sc and absolutely love it. i will odds are be adding a mp40 full size for winter mode. however come summer time i carry a kahr cw9. small and plenty of fire power. you ccant go wrong with any of your choices. personally i would lean towards the xd or mp

You can't compare the S&W SD line with the M&P line........M&P wins by a landslide.
I would also take the M&P or M&Pc over the XD or Glock. Just my opinion though........

The Glock has the easiest, most efficient field stripping procedure of any locked breech pistol. What more could you ask for? You're not one of those weenies that is scared of dry firing, are you?

Glock 23 with the smith and wesson close behind. It depends what you want. I wouldn't mind the glock, but it depends what grip angle you like better and what you are faster with out of the holster. Get what fits your hand best. If glock fits best, get glock. If they are about the same, get glock. If the smith fits best, choose it.

Glock 23, and yes, I've owned both.

Glock has simpler manual of arms, more durable tenifer finish, no ridiculous (IMO) grip safety (which can only spell disaster under certain circumstances), better accuracy (not something we hear enough of about Glocks, but it's true), and better feeding and extracting.

I honestly don't understand why anyone thinks the field stripping of a Glock is even slightly difficult. It's one of the easiest pistols to field strip and detail strip that I know of.

I carried a Glock 23 for years, and while it has been 100% reliable and accurate, as an old 1911 shooter I've never quite like the grip angle and basic feel. I've been tempted to try an XD-M after owing an XD-455, but Springfield built the 3.8 with the same grip size as the standard model. ***? If they had come out with a true compact with a shorter grip, I would have snapped it up.

I don't care for the M&P grip and like the feel of the Sigma better, but the Sigma has its own issues. I'm extremely interested in the new SD9 and SD40, but haven't had a chance to look at one in the flesh. And of course it's a new gun without a lot of time in the field.

You could do a lot worse than the Glock, and it's pretty hard to do better.

The Glock and the S&W should give most shooters, faster more accurate follow up shots and double taps. The XDs have a very high bore axis and should torque the wrist more. I see and shoot Glocks at IPSC matches, with more M&Ps showing up in the hands of very capable shooters. Never considered an XD for my arsenal, good pistol there are better choices IMO.
I would recommend a 9mm over the .40 for carry, in my experience the ballistic performance difference is minimal. With a 9mm like a G19, it would be easier to make multiple accurate hits on multiple assailants, than with the G23. I usually carry a CZ PCR, but may give much of it's duty to a SIG RCS 1911 .45ACP.

Thanx!

Thanks to all of you for your advice. A little helpful. I put down on the G23 cuz I've owned & shot Glock before & am well aware of their accuracy & reliability.
AM going to try out the xdm 3.8 40 just to see how it feels in my hands, but it looks like it'd be a lil difficult to conceal, though not too much.

@ Horvath819

I have a CrossBreed Supertuck for my FNP .45 & it does the coneal job above & beyond. If the Supertuck can conceal that beast the XDM 3.8 40 is nothing for it!

No I'm no dry-fire fearing weenie, lmao, nor do I believe it to be difficult, I just don't like having to pull the trigger to release the slide. IMO they could use the same dimension & material of their slide stop for a manual slide release switch & still keep their slim almost-snagless free profile, just my opinion. Now before you say anything I know that the only real safety to any firearm is the person who is using, their common sense, intelligence, experience, & familiarity with them. To me it's just a bad step in engineering, but I understan& d it & if it didn't work the 23 wouldn't have the positive track record that it does.

Once again this weapon will be my primary cc pistol. Hands down the xdm 40 is the better looker & I really like the grip safety as well, however it's a lil too blocky, but alas I haven't tried one out yet. IMO a gun for cc isn't supposed to be pretty, but rather have easy deployability, accuracy, well-balanced, range, stopping power, & practical mag capacity. I'm sure someone will say that I left something out & I'm certain I probably did. :neener:

Once again, thanks for the info & I welcome any all else that anyone may have to offer. I will keep ya'll posted on me decision, but more than likely will be the G23 (beyond it's legend the ability to customize it & add it to a CAA Tactical Roni-G1 AR Carnbine system!!! :D), unless however the XDM amazes me & there are any special after market effects for the msuch as the Glocks have, but I doubt it...

I own a G23 for the house and carry and XDSC9mm in a crossbreed. It may sound silly, but I like the grip safety on the XD and the 14 rounds of 9mm. Glocks are great guns. So are the XDs. You can't go wrong with either. I agree however that the G23 is the standard by which other compact polymer pistols are judged.

I've been tempted to try an XD-M after owing an XD-455, but Springfield built the 3.8 with the same grip size as the standard model. ***? If they had come out with a true compact with a shorter grip, I would have snapped it up.
Yes, this is the real problem with the XD's....
On the 3.8" model they shortened the wrong end.
Instead of shorting the barrel they should have shortened the grip.
After all, the grip is the most difficult part to conceal.

I have owned a Glock 23 for 15 years.
My son bought an XD-m this spring.

I got to say if I didn't have a fortune tied up in Glock magazines, holsters, night sights, and a thumb safety, it would have long ago been traded for an XD already.

The XD has a better trigger, a grip safety, and a grip angle that fits the average human hand!

I prefere the Glock 23. The only flaw it has: Too snappy recoil. It shoots fine, no harder to handle than a 9mm. But for some reason my hands don't like the 23's snap.

It's still one of my bestt CCW pistols.

The XD's trigger felt too long to me. I like a trigger to break sooner on midsize guns.

i like .40 alot. I have an xd service model (non "m") with over 18,000rds and it is still going strong. I couldn't be happier with it.

I like glocks, and i have owned a 23, i recently sold it. Glocks in my opinion are best in 9mm. I prefer the glock 19, and i own one.

I like the xdm's because of their capacity.

The m&p's are awesome, reliable, and accurate too, you can't go wrong with either of them.

If iwas to choose one of the above, i would go with either the xd or if i had to choose from your list specifically i would go with the xdm just off of personal experience.

I have a Glock 19 (9mm) and an XD 40 in S&W. What surprised me was the felt recoil is about the same with 115 gr for the 9 and 180 gr for the 40. The 40 hits a lot harder.

Just as a point of interest, I flub up somehow and got a .380 (use to be called a 9 mm short) loaded in the 9. It shot OK but jammed the next round. I started blaming the gun till I picked up my empty brass and saw the difference in length. This is the only time it has ever jammed.
