Dear Brady Members and Supporters,

Last Friday, our family gathered as we marked the 26th anniversary of my husband Jim's shooting. This week, as many families around our country gather together for religious and cultural reasons, I have asked my friend Rev. Rachel Smith to share with us her thoughts about the connection between family, spirituality, and our important gun violence prevention work — a connection that inspired her to start a new program for the Brady organization, called God Not Guns. Please read her message below.

My thanks to Rachel for all she does for our movement. And thank you to everyone in the wider Brady family — donors, activists, Chapters, volunteers, and staff — for your efforts throughout the year to prevent gun violence in America.

Sincerely,

Sarah Brady, Chair
Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence

Dear Friends,

During this week that is considered holy to many religions, I remain saddened by the gun violence problems we have in America — and I've come to believe that we must recognize this never-ending loss of life for what it is: a spiritual crisis facing our country.

As people of faith, we must stand witness to the destructive power of gun violence. We must say we will rely not on guns, but on God; we will affirm not guns but life; and we will bless not guns but our common humanity. We must hold a higher value saying that our children's lives are a sacred trust and that human life is more important than the so-called right to bear arms. Let us join together in saying "No More!"

To that end, I am proud to be the founder of God Not Guns, a new Brady Center initiative. The God Not Guns Coalition seeks to raise awareness of gun violence as a spiritual and moral crisis. We call on every congregation, synagogue, mosque, and gathering of people of faith to work toward a peaceable society where all children have the opportunity to grow and prosper, and where everyone can live without fear of being cut down by gun violence.

We invite every faithful individual and faith-based group to join us as we work to prevent the tragic toll of gun violence. Please go to GunNotGuns.org and learn about our work and how you can join our efforts.

Living our faith in ways that build stronger people, families, and communities is a powerful demonstration of our commitment to faith-based living. The loss of nearly 30,000 Americans each year to gun violence demands prophetic response from the faith community.

As many of us reflect on our religious traditions this week, I call on people of faith to act and to awaken to the spiritual issues at the core of gun violence.

Sincerely,

Rev. Rachel Smith

P.S. Please mark your calendars for September 29-30, 2007. This weekend will be the first observance of an annual God Not Guns Sabbath. This observance is being planned in partnership with Riverside Church in New York City. If you want information about how your congregation can participate in this special time of worship please visit the God Not Guns website. It is my hope that congregations of every faith will join us as we mourn the lives lost to gun violence and renew our commitment to the Divine vision of a peaceable kingdom.

Looks like September 29th-30th I'm going to buy guns, ammo, and make a trip to the range. sigh... damn anti's always making me spend money yo mute their cause.

I pray to God each and every day for lightning to strike a certain loud mouth down........

Looks like a sad attempt to tap the Evangelical/Christian population. :barf:

The Brady organization once again demonstrates that they have no shame! :fire:

I guess I just don't have the faith to belive that god will protect me and my family better than my 357mag.:uhoh:

A popular old west saying: god made man, sam colt made them equal.

Very interesting....

Even if you disagree with the reading of the Commandment as "Thou shalt not do Murder", it doesn't say "Thou shalt be a sheep" either....

There's also plenty of New Testament "buy a sword" material to contend with. I'm surprised nobody's quoted it here yet.

Typical Brady Bunch nonsense....

I've got two guns on my "buy list" right now. Guess I need to plan for a third....

Regards,

I am afraid that many of the churches, synagogues, and mosques who will embrace this initiative already serve a neutered god. In other words, they are already on the wrong side.

It is the Lord God Jehovah who has granted us the right to self-defense. He has no problem whatsoever with guns used in the protection of life and family.

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (1 Timothy 5:8, ESV)

In the same way that God requires me to work to provide bread for my family He also requires that I provide for their protection. To do less would make me worse than an unbeliever.

God not guns?

I say, rather, guns that we might do the work of God.

"......Certainly, the intrinsic value of life and the duty to love oneself no less than others are the basis of a true right to self-defense ... legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for someone responsible for another's life, the common good of the family or of the State. Unfortunately, it happens that the need to render the aggressor incapable of causing harm sometimes involves taking his life. In this case, the fatal outcome is attributable to the aggressor whose actions brought it about, even though he may not be morally responsible because of a lack of the use of reason." - Pope John Paul II

Crazed Rabbit

I wonder if this will spawn another of those "thou shall not kill" vs. "thou shall not murder" debates. I have not heard one of those in almost a month.

Looks like a sad attempt to tap the Evangelical/Christian population.

They don't need to try all that hard with some. Many denominations favor strong gun control, such as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), a fairly large protestant denomination.

I would say this whole thing is about nothing more than Brady wanting another till to dip into provided by the fools of the world .

At her age by time the IRS catches them they wont bother to prosecute her and if there is a Democrat in the oval office she would get a pardon anyway .

I don't know who their God is, but mine helps those who help themselves. And I've helped myself to a .45 and a lot of bullets to keep helping myself to freedom and safety, than you very much.

Well, Christianity is one of those things that can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I'm not one to say that this interpretation of Jesus' teachings is wrong. I probably can't live up to it, but I respect those who want to live a completely non-violent life. I will respectfully disagree when they want me to live up to their morality, same as I do for those who interpret the Bible to say I can't cohabitate with the woman in my life, work on Sunday, eat pork, or that all of my gay friends are going to Hell.

I am starting a coalition of my own: God Not Work.

I intend for God to support me while I sit at home and watch TV, just like God will protect me from anything and everything so I don't need a gun either.

I am not a religious person, however, I do respect the good that can come from religion. Much good work is done and money given in the name of charity and good.

However, using people's good intentions to further your own cause is disgraceful. This goes for the anti-gun crowd, those who detonate car bombs in Northern Ireland, or those who sympathize with 9/11 hijackers.
