So, in the car today I listened to the Going Ballistic PodCast with Ryan Cleckner on First Focal Plane Scopes vs Second Focal Plane scopes. He does a great job of explaining what they are, why you would want one or the other and why you wouldn't. Highly recommend listening to this if you don't have a rock solid understanding...

This podcast is great. I have been putting together a long range training rifle and listened to this very episode a few weeks ago before deciding to get a 2nd focal plane scope based on his advice.

Mr Cleckner normally has pretty squared away advice. I don't have time to listen to the podcast to hear what he's actually recommending, but I'd contend that with very very few exceptions, if you want to be proficient at practical long range precision shooting, you need a first focal plane scope.

Yea he does a good job of explaining the benefits of first focal plane for long range but also the reasons why a 2nd focal plane is still a good choice. I figure after I do a lot of practice and skill building I may be able to justify the expense for my next build.

Ah but if money is the shortfall then a fixed power might be your next best bet and can always be useful once you've saved for something more.

I looked at some fixed powers but couldn't find one with the features I wanted (return to zero, parallax adjustment, etc.). Most of them seemed to be aimed more at hunting. I ended up going with a Vortex 4-16x HS LR and so far it is much awesome.
I have too many rifles and too few scopes so any suggestions are appreciated.
