***I'm probably going to get a Service grade. The CMP currently has both Springfield Armory and H&R ones in...is any one more "desirable" than the other?

No, going to the stores ain't an option for me, just too far away. :(

***About how long does it take for the GCA to enroll you as a member once they get the form & payment? I didn't think to make a copy of my application beforehand to send off with my order...:eek:

Get the Service Grade or better if it floats your boat. The SG's have looked pretty nice the last couple months.

The gas plug is a no-brainer to swap out.

GCA faxes membership data to the CMP I think weekly (or every other week at the least).
 
I went with field grade on mine, but I know the Garand pretty well, and wasn't worried about fixing stuff. and I'm paying for it (not out of pocket, but out of convenience). not 200rds through mine and I start having problems with the op-rod. I called CMP and they've been amazingly helpful (I'm going to post a thread when I get my op-rod back from them), and I don't think I'm going to pay for a new op-rod. IF you can afford the service grade, get it. If not, when stuff breaks, call up CMP and they'll help.

From my experience so far, the CMP is quite helpful (I contacted them to see if a photocopy of my 'official' copy of my birth certificate would do - it would, BTW).

(I need the original document I got from the Register of Deeds to RENEW my driver's license here in NC now...but that's a rant for another time & place... ;) )
 
Go with the H&R. They are more desirable in the collectors arena. My favorite was a woodless dane they offered last year. I bought it, had The Garand Guy install a new barrel, bought new gas cylinder, like new oprod, all new springs, new CMP stock that I added more BLO to, and a beautiful re-park from Springfield Inc. for $75. I had about $700 in it when done, it looked so good, a friend wanted it. He wanted it so bad that he swapped his still in the box CMP Special Grade Garand for it. So now I have a new unfired Special Grade, which BTW, is the same as I had, but done by the CMP. So, it is more valuable to the collector.

You get about a day or so notice. Unless something has changed since I got my last one, they give you the link to the Fedex tracking for your shipment 1-2 days before it is shipped.

The link will not work until the Fedex guy scans it into their system when he picks it up. Then you know it's on it's way and you can track it.

I recall that they ship priority overnight which is by 10:30 AM delivery.
 
On ammo, I was looking at some stuff in a catalog...

I saw offerings by quite a few makers that had very similar specs to the CMP surplus (bullet weight, FPS and energy) - the only difference being bullet type (IE, more offerings than FMJ). Would these be OK to use in a Garand without the adjustable plug?
 
Call the manufacturer and ask. The CMP Greek stuff is excellent and as about as cheap as they come.
 
The CMP H&R "Correct Grade" is now listed at $975.00.

Service Grade is $595.00

Thinking of buying correct grade. Worth the money? I can afford it if it is, but just don't want to waste money.

I have a decent looking Springfield Garand that shoots like a champ, so now I really want one that looks good. If it shoots good, that's a bonus, but I want one that is pretty and that has value.

Comments or thoughts on the CMP H&R correct grade at $975.00?
