going on a road trip need some legal help

hi this is my first post iam new here but i will be going on a trip from tx to nm.
i want to take my shot gun with me. does aynone know the laws on this? i am 18 and the gun was a gift from my dad. can i keep it loaded in the car? or will it need to be unloaded? will it need to be in a gun case and locked? if anyone has any info on this it will be very helpfull thxs a lot
