Going to a wedding in El Paso - should I carry?

I'm not paranoid but....

If I couldn't carry in El Paso right now, I wouldn't go to El Paso right now. I was stationed at Ft. Bliss back in 80 and 81 and it was a pretty decent place to be at the time. Even then, if you had a decent car you didn't take it to Juarez and you didn't leave it in the parking lot at the border, unless you wanted to have it stolen or trashed. With the amount of violence that takes place along the border every day, I wouldn't go without a gun especially if you are bringing someone with you.

With all due respect, and no offense intended, why are you asking us? Are you seeking crime data for that area, or just asking about whether we think carrying a gun to a wedding is a good choice?

Aside from just the demographic information for that area (which I know nothing about), I'd say that that deciding whether or not to carry a gun to a wedding, or any other event in your life, is a very personal decision. Only YOU can weigh the factors of risk versus reward (or, put another way, "cost/benefit") of carrying a gun in any given situation.

PRO's:

-If you carry and need a gun, you'll have a gun.

CON's:

-Checking baggage costs money
-Hassle
-Family considerations

Things to think about:

-Are you legal to carry in TX or not?
-Are you planning to drink?
-Are you planning to go anywhere where you can't legally/practically carry a gun? If so, where will you put the gun?

Personally, I carry nearly everywhere I go, and I check a gun each time I fly (which is a hassle, but doesn't cost any extra when flying Southwest). Whatever you decide to do on this one is entirely up to you, and I won't fault you either way. But, as an interesting side note, my uncle was married a number of years ago. He is a gun guy, and requested that everyone in his wedding (including his bride) wear a gun for the ceremony :)

I'm asking to get feedback on where the 'hassle' line is for most people. However, it seems that to most people, I have not yet hit the line. So, this will help motivate me to plan to carry while I'm out there.

As stated previously you must have a concealed carry permit from Texas or a reciprocal state to carry on your person CONCEALED. In the vehicle is another matter. you may carray a CONCEALED handgun locked and loaded in the vehicle as long as you are not prohibited from owning the firearm and you are not in the process of committing a more than misdemeanor offence (speeding ticket does not preclude you from having firearm in car). Note importance of concealed.
