My wife, son and I are going to SC for a beach trip in about 2 weeks, and while the laws for SC will not be a problem (Permit honored, in-car carry, signs must be posted regarding where i cannot carry etc..) My question is, how do i keep my pistol available, concealed, and sand-free while on the beach? Maybe a BoB of some kind? Any thoughts or ideas would be apreciciated!

We've had this conversation a number of times (might do a search on "beach" or "beach carry").

You'll always face some sort of compromise. Either the gun in relatively inaccessible, or you aren't dressed for the beach, and/or can't really participate in beach-type activities like swimming, surfing, sand castling, and so forth.

The most reasonable choice I've come up with is to have a bag or backpack to keep the gun in, maybe inside a ziplock bag as well, and then you and the wife take turns playing while the other keeps close by the bag. Bag thefts on the beach are very common -- don't leave a really nice present for a theif!

I would get a wet suit and dress up like a Navy SEAL. The Sig226 will fit right in.
(sorry, but I couldn't resist)

Zip-loc bag in a belly band would be the best choice of a sort. Either that or plan on a good cleaning afterward. I think the ammo would survive beach immersion but you'd have to make sure the internals were drained of water before shooting. Government surplus 1911s would be the best bet to defeat sand due to their loose fittings.

That being said, and I can't prove any of it, being on a beach is probably one of the safest places you can be in public. Everyone else is similarly defenseless (offenseless?) other than brute force, unless the crips and the bloods have scheduled a contest there. When's the last time you heard of any type of crime involving visiting the beach? Not saying it can't or won't happen, and I'm all for being armed 24/7, just sayin' the odds are with you on this one.

What I actually do is not bring it to the beach and have a good time.

If I did carry, the only option that will let you actually play (a little bit at least) at the beach is some kind of Smartcarry type setup, and I would take a Glock, and do a detail strip and thorough flush out with fresh water afterward.

The beach will be safe. But if you must, bring a fishing pole and a tackle box with a filet knife in it. (And tackle, because you'll spend a lot more time fishing than defending your life.)

This would be an ideal day of people watching if you ask me. but I agree that carry at the beach is a difficult thing at best.
I know someone who used to use ziploc bags and a side pocket in some cargo shorts but that could get hinky quick as he admitted to me. I would try going with some type of water proof bag and pocket carry in Cargo shorts though

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! having read the threads i found via search (thanks Sam1911) I think we're gonna go with the "tackle box" idea, leave the pistol in the car, and have a good time.

P.S. Sam if you would, could you close this thread, as it has certainly served it's purpose and there are other, more complete threads on the boards.
