Just wondering if anyone knows what's up with Speer Gold Dot short-barrel ammo. I can't find it anywhere on line or in the Houston area. Anyone know of a source?

Here is a response from Speer Service I received Wednesday:

Tom,

Part # 23921 or 38 Special 135 GR +P Gold Dot Short Barrel is indeed still an active product. We are trying our honest best to meet the high demand.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

I found them at northwestshootersupply.com. They were shipped yesterday:)

Hope this helps.

I imagain gold dots are going to become somewhat scarce.

France has adopted the speer gold dot for all of its police forces. And as I recall homeland security also recently ordered a very large amount

Keep in mind that Speer GD are the most issued ammo used by the majority of law enforcement agencies in the US. So demand would be higher than most others.

Their .38spl is pretty much the best thing ever out of a snubby. There is virtually no wasted powder, so the recoil is less, the flash is less, the blast (sound) is less, and you don't loose any more from the short barrel than is already expected at that length. But it is hard to find. I found 6 boxes at a gun show last year and bought them all. I have seen only a box here and there since then from the coast to moutains.

There is a shop local to me that always seems to have at least a couple boxes in stock.

Part of the issue for me is that difference in packaging between the Short Barrel and regular is one tiny little "Short Barrel" printed on the box. More than once I've seen shops pile them all together, making it hard to find the Short Barrel stuff. I always check the pile of regular Gold Dot .38 spc carefully.

google for streicher's (police supply) and see if they have any--

and, for those of you inclined to do reloading, a search in our Reloading forum here will find numerous discussions--and recipes--that will match the GDSB 38+P round with cast bullets for practice or with GDSB bullets for carry or for practice. This was a hot topic about four-five years ago, and several of us worked up loads duplicating both the ballistics and the subjective recoil.

135-gr. LRNs are available in .358 sizing, and 140 LTCs work equally well. The 38+P ballistics--nominally 860-900 fps from a 2" barrel with the 135-gr. bullet can also be obtained in a 357 Magnum case. However, for the cast bullet practice rounds, it is better to duplicate the subjective recoil and then practice-practice-practice.

I figure these rounds cost perhaps 13 cents to make, and that includes case amortization costs spread over ten loadings.

A few months ago, I went by my local shop and they had some in .9mm and .38 so I bought a few of each. The following weekend I saw they had replenished and found out its something they regularly carry. Truth be told, in .38 special, I don't find it as accurate out of my snub nose but the .9mm is right on point.

I'm in VA by the way, you might have to break down and order a few boxes online.

Just wondering if anyone else has had accuracy problems out of snubs with Gold Dots? The way I shoot it's hard to tell. I had always used the 158 gr. Rem. until I switched to Gold Dots, but haven't shot that many yet.

It's just amazing how hard it is to find the 135gr short barrel Speer ammo in both .38 Special +P and .357 Magnum. When you do find it it's very expensive and can be found only in 20 round boxes. The last time I saw the .38 Special +P ammo it was $26.95/20 rounds. IMO that's outrageous! Just 2 years ago I was able to find the 50 round boxes and they were much cheaper than today...

I like and carry that ammo but if I can't find it at a better price it will soon became the ammo I used to carry! I'll go back to the FBI Load, even in my snub nose revolvers.

This guy sells a decent selection and his prices are great! I just bought 500 rounds of GDHP for about half what other sites are charging. Boxes of 50 for slightly over what some sites want for 20

I reload and when I go to Houston, I stock up on Speer GDHP bullets. I go to 10 ring, Carter's country and some small shops there and stock up as they are more difficult to find here in the Dallas area.
