Golden Tiger ammo

a boat tail bullet for cheap 7.62x39mm FMJ practice ammo? just dumb. there's a reason they don't just make every bullet with a boat tail and it's because unless it's really precision made it will give you some flyers. It's an AK, you aren't going to be shooting long enough distance for a boat tail to have any positive effects.

gimmicky.

if it's important to you to seal your ammo with lacquer just do it yourself with nail polish and better ammo. you can even have it ready in stripper clips that way.

Keep in mind not all rifles that chamber 7.62x39 are AK's. There are AR's, SKS's, Sigs, PTRs, etc.

I don't see a better BC which translates into better retained velocity/energy as a "gimmick".

The last thing I would do is sit down with nail polish and seal 1000 rounds of ammo when I can buy sealed ammo for about the same price as unsealed ammo. But then I'm lazy like that. :)

sturmgewehr,

Have you tested Golden Tiger in enough quantity to have an opinion about its reliability- specifically in the MR556? Does the lacquer gunk up the chamber? Any FTEs?

I've not done an extended shooting session with the Golden Tiger. I have done it with the older lacquer cased Wolf ammo, shooting 1000 rounds in a relatively short period of time through a Colt M16A2. I've done that several times actually, and never had any problems.

The "gunk" that most people encounter is the same with polymer cased steel ammo. It's not the polymer or the lacquer (people claim both do it) building up in the chamber, it's carbon building up in the chamber. On steep case walls like the 7.62x39 and the relatively loose tolerances of the average AK's chamber, it's not a problem with the rifles. When shooting .223 out of a often times tightly chambered AR15 this carbon build up causes stuck cases. It's especially bad when you shoot say 1000 rounds of Wolf then run brass ammo through your rifle without cleaning the barrel/chamber. The carbon build-up in the chamber is attributed to the steel case not sealing against the chamber wall like brass thereby allowing propellant gases and carbon to pass by the casing.

I do have another case of the Golden Tiger coming and I will run a good number of rounds through my M16 on full-auto and get things nice and toasty and see how the Golden Tiger stacks up to the Wolf I've used in the past.

I have about a half case of Golden Tiger and it takes 2 hits from my Ruger M77 MK II to get it to fire.
Keep in mind Russian ammo is typically primed with military grade primers (hard), not match primers (softer). It takes a good whack to set them off. The M77 likely isn't designed to be used with military primers.

I've fired over 3,000 through my Yugo and consider it the best of the bunch for my rifle. I'll buy no other.

I bought 300 rounds of golden tiger about three years ago because it was cheap and I was told it is better ak ammo and not often available. As it now sells for almost twice as much as when I bought it, when available, and most russian ammo does not, there must be something to it.

I think someone with an AR chambered in 7.62x39mm looking for more range would be a person with a confused concept of what they want in their rifle.

It's got it's downside otherwise it would be on every bullet. a boat tail design can be less accurate but people do it because it makes up for it on the longer ranges. but a short range cartridge like 7.62x39mm you have all the downside and little opportunity to get the upside because of that loopy trajectory that limits it to about 300 yards.

it's a cool sounding premium feature and velocity/energy might sell better than a bullet that's just accurate. perhaps a poorly manufactured boat tail made that flyer in your group. or not. hard to say.

Who has a good buy on this stuff? I've found a few places that have it for approx $215.00 per 1000 rounds.

I have found the Golden Tiger ammo to be the most accurate I have used in any AK...If the boat tail bullet is responsible, that's the kind of "gimmick" I like.
I am wanting to try the Yugo corrosive, though. I have heard some very good things about it.

Wideners has some for $215/1000. I just ordered more. Add $40 for shipping to my zip code.

Golden Tiger should give you a bit of commission. I just bought 2K rounds of this stuff thanks to your testing. I plan on putting all of it through my WASR UF the day after it's delivered. I'm curious how both the AK and ammo will perform.

Golden Tiger is good stuff, and grouped really well in my WASR 10/63. It held 4 MOA out to 400 yards. That's less than man-sized groups at that distance. It definitely groups better than the Wolf stuff I have. As soon as I shoot up all this cheap Wolf I have sitting around, I'll buy another case of Golden Tiger.

I used some of my old golden tiger in my romey sks, why waste it in an ak, two days ago and it was real accurate. But not much more than the 20 year old norinco I shot from the same rifle the same day. Go figure.

strumgewehr

I'm one of your subs on youtube (I'm P226nut there) and I am really glad to see the military arms channel on thehighroad.

I've put a number of links to your videos on thehighroad infact about a week ago someone asked if a 6.5 grendal ak was possible and if anyone made one and posted your vid as the answer.

anyway I bought a few boxes of golden tiger and love it, my groups were alot tighter with it compared to wolf. I liked it so much I just ordered a couple of cases.
