What would be the best AK rifle for a person who has never owned one before? I prefer 7.62x39 over the 5.45. The only AK platform i've ever shot was a friend's CZ Vz58 and it was fun, but the stock was a little too short for me. (I'm 6'6"). I don't care if it has wood furniture or polymer as lonng as it is black and not plum. Tell me what you think. I'd like to keep it under $1000.

Wow.

I think this question gets asked in a new thread in this forum almost everyday.

How much you wanna spend?

You can spend $1000 on an AK, and it will be real nice. (Krebs, etc.)

You can spend less than half that, and it will probably be a good shooter. (WASR, Saiga, etc.)

You can buy longer stocks and extended buttplates for the AK if the one that comes on it is too short for your liking.

If you are 6 ft 6 in, any 'stock' AK pattern rifle is going to feel like a toy to you. I think you're going to have to swap the stock on whatever AK you buy. An extended buttplate will not be enough for you. They really aren't made for tall shooters.

I have a WASR with a folding stock. I love shooting it. You can find it for $400 if you shop around. Probably $450 if you want it NOW.

I think I wil have to change the stock out. I am really looking hard at the arsenal slg21. I also sent hickok45 a personal message on youtube to see what stocks he has on his AKs ( He is 6 foot 8 inches).

ARSENAL INC. SGL21 (SAIGA conversion) is a tough one to beat without going for a custom build!!
I recently got mine for $799 at a local gun shop and you might find one slightly cheaper.
Great quality build of mostly Russian ISHMASH parts. Test target with mine was about 3/4" group. So far it has accepted ALL the magazines I've tried. Only modification I have done, or intend to do, is putting a ARSENAL INC. stock in NATO length. The WARSAW PACT one that came on it was fine, but the NATO one is about 1 1/2" longer which fits my long arms better.
Has shot, accurately, all the ammo I've tried including surplus Russian, Chinese and Hungarian.
GOOD LUCK!!

Same experience as me! These are some of the most accurate AKs out there and will never fail you. Its perfect for your price range, expect about $860ish out the door with tax and DROS fees.

With your size, about the only way you will probably be able to get a stock in a length you like would be to put an AR-style collapsible stock on it.

I second the suggestion for a collapsable stock. It would be within your $1000 price range even if you bought the SLG-21 and a quality stock.

You could also try a NATO length stock with an added recoil pad.

The pad on mine adds almost 2"

I would recommended starting with the NATO length if you order the SLG. It costs an extra five bucks, but it's worth a shot even if you're considering replacing it. The Warsaw length was too short for my taste, and I'm only 5'10".

You can get a mini-30 which shoots the 7.62x39 round. I've been very happy with the mini platform. Just pointing out an option.
