What's a good ammunition for home defense/car use, for a G17? I realize that overpenetration can not be totally eliminated, but I would like to reduce it as much as possible.

Use a good name brand hollowpoint. I use Remington Golden Saber and Federal Hydra-Shock in my 9mm firearms interchangeably. I stick to these because they're locally available and I've never had a problem using them at the range. Doing a search of the forums for "HP" or "hollow point" should return enough matches that you'd be able to compare scientific results.

Whatever you go with, be sure to test it to the point that you're confident with it. Most recommend 200 rounds; I go with 100 initially and whatever's in the gun/spare mags on subsequent range trips.

I like the Speer or Proload Gold Dot JHPs (GDHPs), 124 grain +P loads should work nice for you.

If overpenetration is an especially large concern, the Glazers work great. I have used them on an interior wall before and it stopped it quite well. The round was a 9mm.

In my .45ACP's, I use the 230-gr Remington "Golden Sabre"

The .357 Vaquero gets fed the 158-Gr Speer "Gold Dot"

My cheapy .38Spl snubby is stoked with the Fed. 110-Gr "Personal Defense Load"...NOT the +P version.

Each respective ammo used is what I have found works the best in THAT gun.

I use Speer Gold Dot 124 gr. JHP+P. If they're good enough for the NYPD, they're good enough for me. (I've heard Glock is one pistol they're issued.) I've also looked at test results on the Speer web site, and I like what I see.

Since all modern hollowpoints are basically the same nowadays (opinions to our "favorite" brandnames non-withstanding), I would suggest you check your local law enforcement officials and use the same thing they use. That way you know you have a good performing hollowpoint, and it's pretty much lawyer proof. Unless of course the DA wants to take on their law enforcement orgnization for their selection of ammunition.

I've heard this argument several times, but never seen a case in which the time of ammo used in a defensive shooting was the deciding factor in whether the shoot was justified. What evidence do you have to back this argument?

I'm not saying it has ever been an issue. I'm saying I don't want myself or anyone I know to be the the one that sets the precedent. I've heard this same argument applied to everything from reloading to civilian firearm training to gunsmithing done to your carry firearm. Let me be on record as saying you're absolutely right, I know of absolutely no cases, civil or criminal, where any of these issues have been a deciding factor in the outcome.

My point was all hollowpoints being basically equal, you've got to choose one. If you're not a shooter who is interested in studying the merits of the latest and greatest ammo, instead you're just interested in loading a gun beside the bed with something that works and never shooting it again (save the lecture, we all know they are people like that out there), this way is better than guessing - and it does have some logical thinking behind it - a) letting your local LEA do the research and b) covering your a$$ IF it ever becomes an issue.

In a nutshell: it pays to CYA, especially when there are no bad effects coming from the covering of it.

I keep Winchesters 147 grain Ranger Ts in my Glock 19.

They cost $16.50 a box plus shipping though, which may be a little expensive, but definatly cheaper than other stuff out there.

If you are on a tight budget, Winchester White Box 147 grain JHPs are really good performers IMO, expanding well though several barriers, even 4 layers of denim.

BTW, IMHO, over penitration is a almost non existant issue, especially when you are inside a house.

The biggest concern would be the missed shots. The best solution to that is to practice, practice, and practice.

It should also be mentioned that at least 100 rounds of your self defense ammunition should ran through your gun to ensure reliablity. I prefer 200 or so, but 100 is the absolute minimum.

In my apt gun i use 145gr 45 colt glaser silver's and my 870 is loaded with winchester 2¾" # 4 shot
pheasant load.

Winchester 115 gr Silvertip.. one of the fastest non +p rated loads on the market.

Or 115 gr PMC Starfire... has a profile that lets it feed like ball ammo.

MagSafe SWAT Loads - Designed for Home or Apartment use! Breaks up in sheetrock walls!

.44 Special 94-gr SWAT load at 1,500 fps/470 ft-lbs (3")

.38 Special 68-gr SWAT Load is 1,420 fps/304 ft-lbs (2")
