Good Ball Powder for S&W .40

Can you guys give me a couple of good ball powders for a .40 S&W under a 180g bullet?

I use both W231 and Alliants Power Pistol with good accuracy.

I use Win 231 for 175 lead and 180 fmj loads.

I like Universal Clays in .40, but AA #5 is very good as well. I load some AA #2 in it as well. I am sure others will do quite well too.

Winchester AutoComp.

It's new and was developed specifically for use in semi-auto rounds for the 9mm, .38 Super, 40 S&W and .45 Auto. All the data you need is already on the Hodgdon Load Data Site. If you want to stick with an older powder Longshot will do a good job too.

800x gets me great velocity with low pressure with 180s.

I've tried all the above.
Nothing superseceded WSF.
At the max loads, velocities are excellent. However, I prefer to load at 85% of max for superior accuracy.

I suggest 5.5gr with the 180gr
6.3 with the 155gr (my favorite).

Accurate and economical.

Very, Very good for jacketed loads in 9mm also.


Blue Dot, Unversal, Clays, 800X, and Unique aren't spherical or ball powders.......... good, but NOT spherical. Cut extruded....
