I think there should be a forum about some good books to read to learn about guns or just some books about some war time stories, or just some books breaking down how to clean the guns or something... You know what I mean, I'm not good at explaining. But while talking about this I would like to ask if there is any good books about sniping I could read about. Seeing as how I want to be a sniper for the FBI. Thank you.

Concur with Gus McCrae.

For now, find a rifle instructor and work on your expert badge.

Gosh Trigger, I am sorry you are getting such a poor response to your thread. I would have expected the usual THR wealth of wisdom!

Maybe there is something about the type of people who join THR? They don't like books or don't read much? Naw. That can't be true.

Here's an idea for you. Think of any one thing you want to know about guns and google it. The internet pretty much has everything that is in any book. It's just scattered all over the place. But, to get you started, here is a pretty big site that has hours of reading to it: Internet Armory.

Also order catalogs from the big gun supply houses. I think either the Midway USA or the Natchez Shooters' Supply catalog has a whole section with hundreds of gun books listed. Maybe both have this.

You can also see the books Midway USA, for example, has available on line at http://www.midwayusa.com/gun-books-and-videos.

In spite of the comments made by some of the previous respondants, reading IS a hugely important part of learning to be a good rifleman, hunter, etc. You just need to "steep" yourself in background information and let it become a part of you. Of course, you need the hands-on shooting in the field and field stripping of arms experience, as well. But I cannot over-estimate the importance of well-rounded knowledge that can come from reading. Enjoy!

there alot of books you can get look on CTD and you can find field manuals on sniping and markmanship you can also find them for DL on the internet if you want just a good read about a man who did it look into white feather or carlos hathcock marine scout sniper
i hate to be redundant but like others said try getting some training take a few rifle courses the experience is better than the knowledge in cases like this

i do agree on the forum for reading material ive been looking for some info in another thread about gunfighters and defense experts i have had NO replies yet

Trigger if you want i can email you a list of books and videos but its too extencive to post even in a PM

Dimis (and Trigger),

You mention
ive been looking for some info in another thread about gunfighters and defense experts
These will be a little off topic from what I think you want, but these three books are great and were kinda required reading for the CHP/CCW course I took:

"IN THE GRAVEST EXTREME - The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection"
by Masaad Ayoob

"THE CONCEALED HANDGUN MANUAL"
by Chris Bird

"HOW TO WIN A GUNFIGHT"
by Tony Walker

Trigger (and Dimis), You can probably buy these books several places, but look here at Alan Korwin's site. Not just this one book sales page, but read the whole site. Hugely important background material and perspective, I think. I've never heard a bad word about Korwin on THR - not one.

I can't even really tell if the OP is serious, or just trying to get a rise out of us. statements like this:
But while talking about this I would like to ask if there is any good books about sniping I could read about. Seeing as how I want to be a sniper for the FBI.
certainly make me wonder. I don't know all the exact qualifications to be an FBI sniper, but I'm pretty sure reading books about sniping wouldn't get you very far in the process.

jbech123,

I was assuming Trigger was just a kid. Looking for inspiration and all, you know. But maybe he is a "troll".

Trigger,

Are you a troll? (if you don't know what that is, you're probably not!)

I'm 15 years old.
My whole life I've wanted t be a police officer. once I realized there were even bigger bad asses I wanted to be a ARMY RANGER from there it went to NAVY SEAL there it went to SNIPER. Right now I am going back and forth between SEAL SNIPER or FBI SNIPER. "The FBI has some of the best snipers in the world" and I quote that from a sniper I know that's in the marines. So I'm just looking for the general advise on what books to read to help me get to my goal. (BEING A SNIPER).

Anything you guys are typing I am looking at on the internet. You all are doing a wonderful job on helping me and I thank you.

And I have no idea what a "troll" is...Do explain.

See the post above that one, the guy who wrote it is Gus McCrae.;)

"The FBI has some of the best snipers in the world" and I quote that from a sniper I know that's in the marines.
Don't take only my word for it, but according to all the comptitiors and trainers i have talked to disagree, as most LE snipers shoot much shorter ranges than military snipers. Force Recon and Seal snipers are probably a lot better, plus they are trained in concealment.

I agree with Gus and 4v50 Gary, go find someone (experianced!) to learn from, and join the military asap. Oh, and work on being physically fit, you will need it.

training will never replace books but....
i have to state that i myself have asked similar questions and got 3000 replies of train train train take a course find an old guru of guns to learn from etc...
guys seriously i think the training responce is beaten to death sometimes some of us just want to read about it and learn a little from what we have read
i myself will never aspire to actualy being employed as a us marine sniper FBI or any other branch/department BUT i enjoy reading about it and then attempting to aply the knowledge at the range
i will NEVER shoot someone at long range with a rifle its not what im asking to learn for i just like to have the knowledge to hit paper just a little bit tighter or a little bit further away not every question is answered with training is all im saying

Trigger,

When 4v50 Gary said "concur" he meant "I concur", which means "I agree". Concur = agree. As someone else pointed out, Gus McCrae was the poster immediately before 4v50 Gary. Hint: When you come up to a word you don't recognize, start by looking in an ordinary dictionary, not a "global" internet search. (Of course, there are dictionaries on the internet, too, like Merriam Webster.

Dimis,

Good points in favor of reading! Just keep in mind the old saying "A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing." A good rule for life is: Never make a major decision or take a major action without revealing your intentions to and discussing them with someone (or several) you trust and who is older, wiser or more experienced. THR is good for about half of that, and you can do it annonymously. Not bad.

Trigger,
In THR parlance (look that up!), a "troll" is a poster who writes something that is intended to elicit (look that up) a bad reply from a THR member. The troll is hidden. His post does not say that that is what he is trying to do. That's why we call them trolls. The reference is to the old fairy tales in which trolls (monsters) would hide under bridges, then jump out and ambush unsuspecting travelers crossing the bridge. There is also the double entendre (French borrowed by English) from fishing, like when you troll for fish, you pull a tempting (but fake) bait behind a slow-moving boat (easy for the fish to catch) and wait for an unsuspecting (fooled) fish to bite. Anyway, when I say "bad reply" by a THR member, I mean a reply that seems to show gun owners and shooters to be stupid, evil, vicious, criminal, sadistic (look that up), cruel, uneducated, trigger happy (yikes!), foolish, dangerous, kooky, fanatic or having other negative personality or tendency. That is to say, the troll, even though he has to sign up with THR to be able to post, is NOT really a good guy. True blue THR good guys enjoy guns, are highly educated and trained in their use and strongly support our USA citizens' right to keep and bear arms (RKBA) guaranteed by the Second Amendment (2A) of the US Constitution. The troll is a bad guy who hates guns, hates that ordinary US citizens have the RKBA, wants to have the government remove that right, and a whole bunch of other un-American, anti-freedom, anti-Constitutional things. We call those bad guys "antis", as in "anti-gun" or "anti-RKBA". So a troll is an anti in disguise. And a troll is trying to get you to write something that looks bad, politically, for our RKBA cause. Trolls, or rather, the organizations they work for, copy and record all of our postings for possible future use in court trials or in legislature (look that up) debate or in TV ads or in newspaper articles or in unthought of propaganda (look that up) in the future, to try to take our guns, ammo and RKBA away from us. Very political. Very evil. So, every word you write on THR, keep in mind that the antis are watching and recording and saving what you say. I know; what a drag! But all of this is the primary reason we have moderators (besides the other stated goals of the forum). Moderators are your friends, at least if you want to keep your guns. We are, quite literally (look that up) in a war, here, and the moderators are, if not our commanding officers, at least they are our MPs (military police). And they deserve a huge round of applause for doing it. 'Cept I don't know how to give applause on an internet forum. But OK. Get it?

Trigger,
Reading is all fine and well. Check out Maj. Plaster's book.

http://www.ultimatesniper.com/

Time spent w/ a good coach, a good rifle and a few thousand rounds downrange... will develop marksmanship skills. Valuable prerequisite to becoming an honest to goodness sneak and peak, shoot and scoot type of rifleman. Fieldcraft... another story altogether. Not so much for FBI or LE marksmen I suppose... maybe they call it "street"craft, or "city"craft.

Look up Joseph T. Ward's Vietnam era book Dear Mom. Light reading only mind you.
I'm sure you've done some basic reading already, but please do check out Wiki's entry on Marine Scout Snipers

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scout_Sniper

Note the physical conditioning req'ts. Get a good start now on all that. (never hurts to be in top shape, eh? wish I was.)

Oh yeah, there's this guy here at THR, member Zak Smith... look up his site, bookmark, read. His posts here as well. The man, and his friends... they can shoot a little. ;)

Good luck on your quest. Ah to be youthful and eager, limited solely by (usually) lack of funds.
