I'm going to try and hunt with a crossbow this year and have no idea on what kind of broadheads to look at.

I'm using a base model Horton shooting approx 275 fps. I kind of want to try aluminum bolts (easier to find when target practicing...metal detector works real well for those little suckers that dig into the ground).

What type of broadheads work well for deer up to around 200 pounds...distances out to around 40-45 yards? I'm thinking about a 100 grain broadhead...liking the sound of a fixed blade better than the fancy thingymabob expanding ones.

I'm not a big fan of the crossbow, but what would the world be like if we were all the same? BTW where are you finding 200lb deer? They have to be Mulies. Anyways I use a compound and I love it! I find bow hunting to be far more personal and more challenging as well. There are a lot of great broadheads on the market that's for sure. I'm a muzzy guy and let me tell you they are a great all around head. Durable, accurate, quite, and penetrate deep. They aren't the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. This means you can stock up on them and you will also have solid broadheads. Rage has made a lot of hype, but it hasn't all been positive. Mechanical broadheads do have more issues. Check out the Muzzy MX3 and MX4. The newest addition to the Muzzy family. I use 100gr. All of this is my personal opinion though, everybody had their own opinion.

I have always heard any crossbow with 150 lb draw wieght or greater to go with 125 grain broadheads. Check out Muzzys or G5s. Those are the only 2 I use other than those thingymabob expandables. I don't shoot a crossbow but my buddy does and he told me that the 125 grain thing was like the rule of thumb.
blackops I don't know that there are a lot of mulies in virginia. 200lb whitetail aren't that un common.

Horton use to sell the G5 Tekan under their name. I use it with my 175 team Realtree.

I use 125gr Spifires for my crossbow. My sons have taken alot of deer with these broadheads.

I didn't even bother looking at his location. lol Honestly, I wasn't aware of the fact that whitetail are commonly 200lb+ that's interesting.

Yeah...I've shot several deer around the 200 pound mark...a few does, 8-pointer and 12-pointer. We can sure grow them here in Grayson County.

I do have a 150-pound draw...but then again, it's a base model Horton. I'm positive I'll be sticking with a fixed-blade...but what's the advantage of penetration from a 3-blade to a 4-blade fixed?

Obviously, the 125 gr. will be penetrating deeper, given the right circumstances. I believe that the 100 gr. will give me better trajectory (due to the fact that I'll be hunting from the ground...I need straight shots) and velocity over the 125 gr. Those shoulder blades do have me a bit worried though.

Thanks guys. :D
