i want a ccw permit for my north american .22 mag 5 shot revolver but whats a good knife for that purpose?

A google search of Louisiana+Knife+Law will take you to the legal answer. Individual jurisdictions within the state may have additional laws.

The next question is, how do you intend to learn to use the knife? It's not as simple as just putting it in your pocket.

I don't know what your laws are in Louisiana but if legal I have a liking for the CRKT M16 folder. It's slim, lightweight and opens one handed as quick and easy as a switchblade plus has a small double guard to keep your hand from sliding forward onto the blade if you thrust with it.

Around here (Boston) we're not allowed to carry any folding knife with a blade length longer than 2.5 inches. That means I have to keep my Microtechs, Emersons, and Benchmades at home :fire:

I've settled on carrying an all-stainless Spyderco Delica 4th Generation. The sharpened portion of the blade is 2.5 inches. It's very slim and the clip can be placed in different positions, which makes it very easy to carry. The blade is made of VG-10 and has a nice hollow-grind. It's a great everyday knife. Not bad for $48.

I would also consider the Spyderco Navigator 2, which is slightly shorter overall and also more expensive at $70.

If you don't have length restrictions where you live, you have LOTS of choices. Pick a folding knife with the following features: a full-length handle; a grip that protects your hand from slipping up on the blade; a strong lock that won't collapse on your fingers; the longest blade you can legally carry and conceal (typically 4"); a quality steel that sharpens well and stays sharp; and a blade design that works for slashing and penetrating. Also, you might want to skip serrations...unless this is a dedicated defense tool. Unlike plain edges, serrations are tough to sharpen. You wouldn't want a dull blade when you need it most.

For example, here's a knife I own that meets all these criteria:

All things considered, you can't go wrong with a quality frame-lock, liner-lock, or axis-lock by any of the major manufacturers. Personally, I prefer Microtech, Benchmade, and Emerson for production folders. I haven't been as impressed by CRKT, Kershaw, Boker, SOG, and some others from a quality perspective.

That means the blade is over 2.5 inches long. :scrutiny: So, you may as well carry one of your larger folders [if you want to].

Odds of legal trouble are vanishingly small whether your blade is under 2.5 inches or not.

Yeah, I know. I figure the Delica is "close enough" that it will keep me out of trouble. Besides, it's pretty goofy looking and so far I haven't met anyone who finds it threatening.

My experience has been that full-sized Emerson and Microtech folders make non-knife folks recoil in horror. They seem to be viewed more as "weapons," whereas the Delica looks like more of a "tool."

Don't go with the CRKT M-16. I have one and im not very satisfied with the steel. I am a big CRKT fan, however, this is one knife im not happy with right now. There are TONS of knives to choose from for what you want. My .02 is go with something you can afford from a reputable dealer and something big enough to defend yourself with.
