I made an impulse buy, I believe I got a good deal but just wanted to run it buy you guys and also get some ideas for mods. I was browsing my favorite gun shop and a Bushmaster A3 with a 20in H bar barrel was brought in for consignment. It has been shot no more than 20 times, came with a 30 rd mag and 10rd mag, B-Square mount and 2 boxes of ammo. I walked out the door with it for $650. I thought that at that price I could not really go wrong. I am also very new to AR-15s and would appreciate any ideas for improvement.

I'd say you were in the right place at the right time, congratulations on a good find.

As far as ideas for improvement... The AR15 is one of the most aftermarket friendly guns you could possibly buy.

You could easily spend as much "accessorizing" it as you did buying it but realize that you can have a heck of a lot of fun with it just the way it is now.

Congrats on the new AR!

That rifle is pretty much set to go right out of the box. Shoot it a while and let it talk to you.

Pick up some aluminum USGI magazines for it. Try the magazine section of the www.ar15.com equipment exchange. You should be able to get NIW Labelles or equivelent for around $20 each. Also www.ammoman.com has a good deal on steel Royal Ordnance mags with the good followers.

If you feel the need to buy something for it now, a quick detach scope mount and scope might be nice since it's a flat top. I like the ability to switch back and forth between the carry handle and optics on mine. I picked up an Armalite one piece mount from www.quanticoarms.com

Thanks for the responses. I have not yet perfected the art of guilt free impulse purchases, but it seems like I did fine this time.

G33InMyPocket: I probably will not sell it for a long time. :)

DMK: Thanks for the info, I will shoot it for a while and go from there.

Sounds like you got a great deal. You definitely won't find that kind of deal in my neck of the woods.

Is it a genuine Bushy? I'd check the barrel for the markings. It should have something like "B MP 5.56 NATO 1/9 H BAR"

dats an 800 dollar gun and its not even broken in yet

does it have iron sights or is the bsquare awaiting some glass?

The B-Square came new in it's original box, so yes it has the iron sights on it still. Once the Ban expires I believe I would like to get a light 16in upper and collapsible stock. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Is it common to have several uppers share the same lower?

How long is the breakin period and is there anything special I should be doing?

What would be a good scope to get?

Thanks

if you have 2 uppers and one lower in the safe,
the next time your SO opens the safe there will be 2 rifles and a pile of magazines
;)

for proper break in, buy a case of ammo and a bottle of CLP

apply the clp, shoot, clean with clp, shoot
when the case is gone
repeat

i like fixed 4X power scopes on ARs
and Aimpoints
