My son is turning 8 this year and wants to go deer hunting. All of my rifles are .30 caliber hard kickers except my AK. My AK also has an adjustable stock, scope on a side rail mount and a nice aftermarket trigger. I have never used it for hunting but it seems like it is the only option at this point as he has short arms and it will fit him. Most of my shots are less than 100 yards. The AK should be plenty accurate within 100 yards (2 moa with milsurp ammo). My question is, can anyone recommend a good hunting round for this caliber. I do reload but I don't think I want to spend the money on dies for this caliber as I mostly shoot the cheap surplus ammo in this gun. Thanks in advance.

Federal makes a 123 gr fusion bullet that they load as a factory cartridge. They also have a non bonded bullet that is also 123 gr soft point. I have personally seen deer taken with the soft point and I have used fusion cartridges in other calibers. If federal says its good for deer your ok with either one of those.

Hornady also makes a 123 grain SST in a steel cased load that is much like the 125 SST I use on deer in my 300blk ballistics are about the same as the 7.62x39mm. These have been great for me this year.

Heck, I would think just about any hunting sp would work just fine from one of the major manufacturers. Federal does make good hunting ammo. Good luck to him!

I'm certain that any USA made soft tip ammo will work nicely for deer. My family has had great success with Winchester Power Point ammo in other calibers. I have no direct experience hunting with the 7.62X39 cartridge.

Cor-Bon loads a 150gr soft point that slams whitetails in my Mini-30. Pricey, but it is your son.
