Good Gunsmith in Maryland?

Can anyone point me to a good gunsmith in central Maryland? I used to let a certain Gunshop in Parkville work on my guns, but their prices seem high and their work not impressive. I have a Lee- Enfield which needs some repairs and an older Remington 870 I'd like to have a professional look at before shooting.

If you have an 870 that needs updating, Wilson Combat used to do a pretty cheap rebuild for around $170 or so, I'm not positive of the price as it's been awhile. Just a thought.

Ive had bad luck as well...

I cant seem to find anyone decent here in Maryland as well. I sent out emails to a couple different people and when asking about how much money it would cost me to get certain things done, one responded that he is not in the retail business so he cant give me an estimate. Needless to say that I will never do business with that person.

The best thing I can tell you is to take the ride to VA or PA as I am sure there are many reputable smiths in those areas.

Why not call Aberdeen Proving Grounds

and ask to speak to the non-comm instructors for Armorer's(45B)? Maybe they do sidework, or might know of someone skilled in the area.

Valley Gun right? I've used them on occasion. They're OK if it's just a repair, inspection or such, but don't expect high quality smithing, cheap prices or fast service.

That having been said, I havn't found anyone else that I trust to make something work if I can't. What they do, they do well.

try sam betlyon at firefly arms (do a websearch) in lewistown pa (just above harrisburg). most of us on the fal board do our own work, and i would be willing to help just for fun but i don't inventory parts for the guns in question.

don't know if matt is still at valley, and haven't darkened their door in years.

You can try Ellicott Arms 410/465-7979. I have no personal experience with them, but I have seen some of his work at On Target. The guns he had worked on looked really nice, the revolvers left no ring on the cylinder.

He's in LE, may be an armorer.

If you do have him do some work, let me know how it turns out.

I've purchased guns from Scott's and Scott has repaired a couple of guns for me and after the first of the year I'll be taking a couple more to Scott, one is a O/U shotgun for a trigger job and another is a revolver to have the cylenders polished. You can contact scott at .........

Norton........yes I believe Scott could do the job,,,,,,,also he stands behind his work. If he can't do the job then he will tell you so. Scott is a straight shooter in my book. Cheers....and Merry Christmas.

EDIT: If you take a gun to Scott's for repair don't expect it to be done in a couple of days......he normally has a backlog.

All of the good places are busy: garages, contractors, etc.

Scott's is a great place, always friendly and helpful. Right now their hunting for choke tubes that will fit in an Baikal IZH27 that I bought from them, even pulled a couple down off the rack to check while I was their. Why you ask? For no other reason that they care about their customers.

As JPB stated earlier, RA Brown in Westminster is outstanding. I just retrieved my two target rifles from him for some minor trigger work.

However, I am loathe to recommend him since if he gets too much new business, he won't have time to work on my guns! Recommending a good gunsmith in Maryland is like posting the name of your favorite plumber or babysitter. Someone else will snag them.
