Good handgun for the wife?

When we went to get my wife a pistol, I gave her free reign on model unless I had a serious objection, the only stipulation would be that she could not get less than a 9mm and nothing more than a .40smith (big range of caliber choices huh?).

Her first pistol was a S&W Sigma in .40smith. Heavy trigger, but less chance of her accidentally shooting someone. As she became more proficient, I told her that she was ready for something a little better if she'd like to find another pistol (she liked the Sigma and was good with it, but would tire quickly due to the heavy trigger pull). I let her shoot my XD45 Tactical and she fell in love with the ergonomics, though she didn't care for the weight or the recoil. On her own, she left the firing line and went into the shop, returning a few minutes later with her new XD40 Service. She's had it for quite some time now and is pleased with it. She likes the 9mm that I shoot competitions with (CZ75 SP01), but wanted the .40smith for HD.

My wife has 2 handguns. First purchase was a Taurus in 32 H&R Magnum to get her use to handguns and to train her. Then she wanted the Smith & Wesson Lady Smith in 357 Magnum. She shoots Speer 130 gr. 38 Spl +P Gold Dots on a regular basis because we care enough to shoot thugs with the very best. She hikes a lot in the woods also and the 38's are a real coyote disturber. The Taurus still gets used for fun.

When it was time to get my wife her own handgun, we spent a long weekend at a local range that has a wide variety of rentals. I was proud of her (despite suffering a strange twinge in my wallet) when she picked out a Sig P226 for her personal gun. One pair of CT grips later, and it goes to bed with her on the nights I can't (I work 3rd shift).

My best advice is to let her choose, and do your best to stay out of it so that she picks what she wants, and not what she thinks you want her to get.
