I know the key is the particular JHP feeds RELIABLY in your pistol that is the main thing

This is what i gather please inform and correct me and enlighten me

Some of the Best

Corbon DPX
Winchester Rangers

Very Good

Gold Dots
Golden Saber
Federal Hyda or w/e current name
Reg Corbon

Not So Good

Reg Remmington JHP
Reg Winchester JHP
Magtech

If you are using an auto loader you will need to try all of the rounds that you are interested in to see what your gun likes the best if you are using a revolver I would do the same for accuracy and not function of the weapon.

I have a .380 that will not shoot hydra-shok ammo with any reliability at all, it misfeeds after every 2-3 rounds due to the conical shape of the bullet (it prefers a more rounded tip). However this same pistol loves Silvertip hp ammo and it hits very well with it.

My 45s on the other hand shoot the hydra-shok very well and very accurately.

My revolvers will shoot anything I put in them. If I were you and had access to several of the rounds that you are interested in. Shoot as many different rounds as possible and make my choice for carry/protection based upon function of the weapon (if it is an auto) and accuracy of the cartridges tested.

The Winchester PDX1 rounds are also excellent. I suppose you could group them with the Rangers, as they are merely a bonded version of that bullet design. They offer excellent expansion at low(er) velocity, therefor allowing use of heavier, slower bullets. Federal HSTs offer nearly the same performance without the bonding process. Bonding, if you are curious, is the process of mechanically bonding the copper jacket to the lead alloy bullet. It allows better penetration through barriers by decreasing the chances of bullet/jacket separation.

On a side note, Speer Gold Dots are still an excellent bullet design, especially for the 9mm. Double Tap ammunition sells hot ammo loaded with GDHPs for home defense. The 9mm 147 gr. +P GDHP offer trully amazing ballistics as per FBI protocol, 15" penetration at .70 caliber expansion. You can achieve close to the same results hand loading.

When it comes to 45acp- Regular Winchester white box hollow points have done very well for me. Not a single feeding problem, great expansion, and no jacket/core separation like the regular Remington hollow points. They have sealed primers as well.

Winchester Rangers are at the top of my list but they are hard to find around here.

I have a hard time bringing myself to pay a premium price for a questionably premium bullet.

I don't know why you list Reg Remington JHP's as "Not So Good". Remington JHPs have a close profile to FMJ bullets and if your pistol will not feed Remington it probably won't feed any other brand. They've been used extensively and successfully in different calibers by law enforcement for many years. Remington Golden Sabers are one of the top ranked rounds of the current "controlled expansion" type ammo sold.

IMO the best tested ammunition for defense is ammo being sold to law enforcement and their counterpart in civilian "personal defense" ammo. The current LE offerings are both conventional JHP and the "supreme" type JHP's like Golden Sabers, SXT, HST, Hydra Shok, Gold Dots, etc.

There are several small manufacturers or custom loaders that are in the "personal defense" market. Its just my opinion from reading some of the various independent though not too scientific test of the various brands of this type ammo is that they're not significantly better and often not as good as what the major manufacturers produce, certainly not worth paying any premium for their product.

This is a dulpicate of one of my eariler posts:

I always carried JHP in my 9mm autos, but my first 1911 had trouble feeding JHP so I carried FMJ's. Then I tried Pow'r Ball ammo and it feeds perfectly.

Many thanks to Cor-Bon for providing the ammunition used in this test.

Cor-Bon .45ACP 165 grain +P Pow'R Ball

Firearm was semi-automatic action with 3.8" barrel length

Block calibrated at 9.3cm penetration and an assumed impact velocity of 600 ft/sec. (chronograph malfunctioned due to rain at the test site).

Shot 1 - Penetrated to 10.9". Average recovered diameter 0.659".

Shot 2 - Penetrated to 12.6". Average recovered diameter 0.687".

Shot 3 - Penetrated to 11.8". Average recovered diameter 0.698".

Shot 4 - Penetrated to 12.2". Average recovered diameter 0.668".

Shot 5 - Penetrated to 11.4". Average recovered diameter 0.684".

Average diameter = 0.679". Average penetration depth = 11.8"

P.S. I love this site for making comparisons of expansion and penetration.

+1

even from the same mfgr, by the same builder, on the same day, built one after the other, they will NOT absolutely like the same ammo. whether reliability OR accuracy is the issue.

wish i could be more help, but you gotta just do some trial and error.

NEW WINCHESTER® BONDED PDX1™—SUPERIOR PERSONAL PROTECTION AMMUNITION

The new Winchester Supreme Elite Bonded PDX1, which was chosen by the FBI as their primary service round, is now available in a full line of popular handgun calibers. The Bonded PDX1 is engineered to maximize terminal ballistics, as defined by the demanding FBI test protocol, which simulates real-world threats. The new Winchester Bonded PDX is offered in 9mm, 40 Smith & Wesson, 45 automatic and .38 special.
Winchester Bonded PDX1 technology is superior to competitive personal protection loads with features that include:

* Proprietary bonding process—Welds lead and jacket together to work as a unit controlling expansion and providing superior retained weight.
* Hollow point—Works with the bonding process for outstanding performance through tough barriers and impact velocities/ranges.
* Jacket notching—Six segments help promote positive, consistent and programmed expansion at a variety of impact velocities.
* Copper alloy jacket—Contoured for maximum upset over a wide range of velocities/ranges.
* Nickel plated shellcase—Helps ensure positive gun function through smooth chambering and shellcase ejection.

NEW WINCHESTER® BONDED PDX1™....

don't take my statement wrong. as i have absolutely no experience with this ammo, it could be the best HP ever sold!!!

but to winchester ammo division, don't expect an FBI endorsement to sway my decision. based on their firearms and ammo history, it means very little to me.
