Good home defence/ target shooter

Ive read up some on 9mm pistols but have always wanted to fire a .40 cal pistol just to see if I like it. Truth is Ive never fired either. So I wanted to get some opinions here so to know what to look for when I go rent some guns at the range. Im looking for something thats fun to shoot, feels solid in the hands with smooth action, has some dropping power but not over powering (for the home). Also Id like something with capacity and fairly accurate. Asking alot? Last night I took a look at my friends Beretta 92fs, two different H&K 9mm's and a Sig 9mm. I like the feel of the beretta the best so far but want to check out some others too. Ive also heard some good things about Bersa and FN Herstal too. The FNP9 looks sweet but I heard its semi polymer which Im not diggin - I owned a Glock 19 replica once and it felt wierd in the hands, even with the mag in. Also I really didnt like the trigger assembly on that gun

Please throw out some brands and models that might suite what Im looking for, Im going to try some out this weekend.

The .40S&W has more "snap" to it than the 9mm. Both calibers work well for self defense. The 9mm is cheaper to practice with.

It's all about the gun that you are most comfortable with and can shoot the best.

Suffice it to say CZ's are a real sleeper

In terms of accuracy, reliability, ergonomics,

And price ( although that ain't what it usta be).

If you like the Beretta get it, or the Taurus 92 model which is worth the money. The CZ line is well spoken of and of course there is the Browning Hipower but get the magazine saftey taken off and the trigger is much better.

If your not to set against polymer frames and just don't like the grip of a Glock try the Springfield XD or S&W M&P in 9mm or .40. The M&P has adjustable backstraps to fit the best grip to your hand.

Regarding .40S&W or 9mm I go with 9. I have a .45 for the range but defensive weapons are all 9mm. They give me the cheapest practice, fastest follow up shots and what I shoot the most accurate. Good quality hollow points will serve you well but if it goes to all hell ball will work in a pinch.

The S&W M&P is a very nice gun. Fullsize or compact. Comes with 3 different sized palm grips.

I'll add to the CZ P-01, if I could only own 1 semi auto handgun it would be the P-01.

XD9 or XD40, with the 40 get a conversion barrel and you can shoot 9mm too.

If you like the Beretta definitely try it out. They are very accurate and soft shooting. The Sigs are great as well as the HK. Basically any gun you like from the big companies will work well.

You won't find a finer all round pistol than the Beretta/Taurus 92. Then the CZ line of 9mm are terrific.

There is a pretty big recoil difference between 9mm and 40cal. It's not anything you can't handle, but in smaller pistols it can be annoying. I'd go up to 45 cal before i bought another 40..

BEFORE you rent anything, when you get to the range try the fit of several in your hands to see which YOU like - rent those and see how you do. If it doesn't work out, try some more.
