good hunting article in latest Backpacker magazine

In the newsstands now is the survival issue of Backpacker. In this issue, a longtime hiker takes up a rifle for the first time and makes meat. Overall a good article with positive aspects about hunting. I am sure he will get flack from some readers but I plan to send in a kudo to the magazine.
 
He'll get flack for sure.

Many backpackers and hikers are granola huggers. But, in my opinion, anyone spending large amounts of time in woods they aren't familiar with should know how to kill and butcher an animal as a matter of survival.
 
it amazes me that some of these people can love to spend time in the woods, pride themselves on being self reliant, able to survive alone etc. but are unwilling to learn how to shoot, carry a gun to protect themselves, or harvest game.
 
I do read backpacking from time to time, they have good info and gear reviews on stuff that the hunting mags skip by. I wonder how often a back packer picks up hunting or sports afield for some tips and gear reviews. I am glad to see that some one at backpacker has the sack to write an article about hunting and providing for your self.
 
Let's not get carried away with the stereotypes. Yes, there are the casual hikers that like to stroll around the local wilderness park showing off their designer gear, and yes, there are still some hard-core vegan types trying to get back to nature, but the great majority of hikers and backpackers that I have known have embraced self-sufficiency in all its forms.
 
I'm a hunter who often backpacks into country where I hunt. I also backpack quite a bit when it is not hunting season.

There are quite a few people who do both.
 
Yup, I'm chiming in to join the backpacker and hunter crowd. I suppose I would consider myself a granola hippy, but I'm also a science teacher and zoologist. Humans should play an active role in the environment, and that means harvesting game.

Trying to find the article on the site but it's not working. I suppose it's only in the print magazine. I'll have to pick one up.

This reminds me of an article in an old Mother Earth News magazine which had the author using an old Savage 24 22mag/20gauge to eliminate a ground hog that was raiding his garden.
It also went into gun safety and such.
Seems to me it was poorly received by the masses.
I used to read Back Packer back in the 70's and 80's but not so much now.

And I was really impressed. The author describes how he came to a realization that there was a divide between "hikers" and "hunters" that didn't really seem rational to him, so he decided to try hunting. And he really enjoyed it. It's well worth reading.
 
+1 I had a friend show me this article and it was very well written. She shoots a little but had never considered hunting an animal - she said that article almost made her want to try it. Gave her an entirely different perspective she had never even considered.

The article speaks to the general decline of hunting in the US, and also about hunters huge roles in conservation and ethics of the kill. Very positive article and not necessarily what you would expect for that type of publication.
 
I feel I have to chime in here too. We as firearm owners don't like simplistic stereotypes held against us, we can't be doing the same towards others. Yes, there are always examples that fit the stereotype on both sides, but we should not succumb to those ideas and instead be... yes, I'll say it... taking the High Road.

I've been posting some of the very same questions I've posted on this site to www.backpacking.net regarding hunting gear, and I've been very surprised how many hunters/firearm owners have provided valuable input. I did a thread search of hunting and for guns and there are many, many threads out there. For those that seriously hike and backpack, some good advice on these sites.

Even the author of the article admitted there is a divide between "hikers" and "hunters"...

I'm sure there are plenty of hikers that hunt but there are still many hikers that don't.
