A story from the Joplin Globe, via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Interesting that the P-D would be posting a wire story like this from the other side of the state:

63-year-old Carthage woman foils burglary attempt

A 39-year-old woman and a male juvenile remained in custody Monday in connection with a foiled burglary attempt at a grandmother’s home outside Carthage on Friday.

Lt. Aaron Richardson of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department said first-degree burglary charges have been filed against Faith Barrick, of Carthage, and a 16-year-old male accomplice for a break-in at a 63-year-old woman’s home on South Baker Boulevard west of Carthage about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Richardson said the alleged victim, who was home at the time with her grandchild, grabbed a handgun and confronted the would-be burglars as they broke in her back door. He said the grandmother tried to hold them at gunpoint for law officers. But as she stepped back inside her place to make the call to the Sheriff’s Department, they slammed the door on her and fled.

Deputies arrested the suspects about three hours later in Carthage. Richardson said investigators are trying to determine if the suspects can be tied to any other recent burglaries, including one in the same vicinity on Friday.

If only every one of these stories was given the press it deserves. Here's the Joplin Globe link, in case you're curious:

I thought this was going to be yet another posting of the "I'm gonna shoot him in his toodles" granny. Wow. That will teach them.

Hi SSN,

no ones messin' with her grandchild!

You sound surprised... Just an FYI not everything my Grams taught me about an eight inch cast iron skillet had anything to do with cooking. She called it 'loving Christian correction.'

When the early Jesuit fathers preached to Hurons and Choctaws,
They prayed to be delivered from the vengeance of the squaws.
'Twas the women, not the warriors, turned those stark enthusiasts pale.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
