Good price for an AR or are AR prices inflated due to election year jitters?

Hello everyone. I have been looking at AR's for a while. A LGS has Colt 6920's, the base configuration, on sale for $1030.00. So, I have a couple of questions for those who are in the know.

1. Is that a good price for that rifle?
2. Are AR prices, in general, up because of fears about what the election may bring?

I asked that second question because I have heard LGS staff try to use the election as a ploy to get people to buy an AR, suggesting that if The President is reelected these will be restricted. I am just curious if prices are up because of this and therefore may drop similar to the last election?

Oh, one more, does anyone know if, and if so, what is Colt's LE discount?

I appreciate your help and input. I just want to emphasize that I realize that there are other good AR's out there but would like to focus on the Colt. I just don't want to have a brand battle here. Thanks again.

I'm not a Colt guy but that sounds like a good price on a 6920.

Actually right now it's a AR buyers market. Prices are pretty low. I'm sure that'll change as we get closer to this fall's election. You're better off buying right now if you can. I wasn't really in the position to buy an AR, but I scraped some money together last month and bought my new AR.

Good luck, NYH1.

Normally i try to support local gun shops but not when they try obama fearmongering Check Walmart. It's not a bad price but they may be cheaper elsewhere now that all the magpul versions are out

I know very little about Colt. Del Ton makes a wonderful product here in the US that is every bit as good as DPMS or similar. Check them out. You can order a basic carbine or rifle for 650-700, through your LGS. Price might be lower with an LE discount. Local stores around here give like 10%-20% off.

I was going to buy a Del-ton complete rifle kit and they aren't taking orders for 20" lightweight rifle kits due to back orders.

Very good price. The best online prices I've seen for a Colt 6920 are in the $960-980 range, but you then have to add FFL transfer fees and shipping, so your final price would be right around $1030, or even more. It's a great model to start with and the quality is excellent.

Thats a good price for an in store rifle. They can be found online for about 70 bucks less but those places are out of stock. Id snatch that rifle up if its what you are looking for. The 6920 is The Gold Standard for AR-15s.

I would have said that last year was a buyers market. It seems to me that currently prices are creeping upwards and many makers are backordered.

As far as the OP's quetions, that seems a reasonable price. Not a smoking deal but certainly not bad.

Every time I see a question about price I'm told I paid too much for my bushmaster at $850, because for $50 dollars more I could have got a Colt 6920? Now they are between $960 and $1030? This was just last year that these prices were the norm! I would say the prices are starting to inflate. As the year goes on they will go up more I'm sure. If Obama is elected for his second term he doesn't have to get elected ( can't ) again. So he will try to pass any law he has been holding back since the first term. That could mean AWB all over again. This time, I doubt they will make the same mistake twice of having an expiration date.

At least all the weapons and magazines you have will be grandfathered, hopefully. What these people that want to ban assault weapons( their words, not mine ) and high cap magazines (original equipment) don't realize is the gun and gun accessories world employ a large amount of people. More than most people know. It means factory, wharehouse, trucking, distributers, online stores, large big box stores, down to mom and pop gun and sporting goods shops would be shut down or at least need to lay people off. That would be a large loss of employment. All this means is expect to pay more for less very soon because fear is like a disease, it can spread fast.

$1030 at a local store is pretty reasonable. I have seen Colt prices vary wildly. I don't pretend to know what overhead costs are at various local gun stores but I've seen them north of $1300 which is outlandish. Sometimes you see folks at gun shows with the same crazy markups. I would move on a price of $1030 if I was in the market for a 6920 and if I couldn't grab one at distributor cost :D

Taliv,

Does the local shop claim Obama is going to take away guns or are they just stating the obvious fact that there is a rush on stuff because of the chances Obama will win his reelection?

1. Is that a good price for that rifle? YES. You can find it cheaper, but I could live with that price for an in-person purchase.

2. Are AR prices, in general, up because of fears about what the election may bring? YES.

I asked that second question because I have heard LGS staff try to use the election as a ploy to get people to buy an AR, suggesting that if The President is reelected these will be restricted. I am just curious if prices are up because of this and therefore may drop similar to the last election? They could, but either way, the Colt will hold it's value better than a 2nd or 3rd tier AR.

Oh, one more, does anyone know if, and if so, what is Colt's LE discount? Don't know - ask your dealer, or contact Colt through their website. Or your Department armorer might know.

Hope that helps - buy your 6920 and rest easy.

Again, thanks for the responses. A couple of people have said that this is a good or fair price for one in the store. They don't have one in stock but said that they could order one in with no extra cost. Does this change anyone's opinion? Thanks again.

I'd go for it, it wasn't until the last year that that the LE6920 dropped to the $900-1100 range at online retailers, so to find it for that price in person is a pretty good deal. Here in Texas, in the land of gun shows, 6920s still run in the $1200 range, with the 6940 still pushing $1600.

Good find, man, good luck.

Order that puppy, the price is good & the online $960 ones are vaporware for the time being. I ordered my 6920MP-R (1 of 1500 Talo edition with six Magpul add-ons) from my LGS and I paid $1210 + tax. I bet the base 6920 approaches that by the time the election is over even though the AR market is beyond saturated already. $1030 is about the minimum you would pay ordering elsewhere & shipping it in if it were in stock online anyway. Go for it, that deal won't get better for quite awhile I bet.
