Man Killed In Gary Monday Morning

An Indiana State Police trooper was shot and killed Monday morning.

A state police spokesman said the shooting happened at about 5:30 a.m. along Interstate 80 near Gary, about 9 miles from the Illinois state line.

Early reports suggested that Scott Patrick, 27, a three-year veteran, was gunned down after he stopped to help a driver.

A suspect reportedly is in custody.

Officer shot, killed on expressway

December 22, 2003 — Investigators are gathering evidence into the fatal shooting of an Indiana state trooper. Scott Patrick, 27, was killed early this morning near the Grant Street exit of I-80-94 in Gary, Indiana. A suspect is now in police custody.

It was an emotional day for the Indiana state police. They held a news conference and many of the troopers who attended the conference and were visibly shaken about the death of their co-worker. They did try to describe in detail what happened to trooper Patrick when he was shot and killed.

"We are going through all the stages of grief right now -- shock, disbelief. All the stages anyone else would go through in the loss of a loved one," said Lt. Larry Keiser, Indiana state police.

The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. Monday off of I-80/94. But something strange happened before the shooting, motorists started calling 911.

"My understanding is the district received cell phone calls on a vehicle that had been driving down the interstate with several flat tires on it," said Lt. Larry Keiser.

That car was reported stolen from Chicago on December 16. Authorities say trooper Patrick was checking on the report of a disabled vehicle in the area of I-80 and Grant Street. He found the vehicle and made contact with the alleged driver, Darryl J. Jeter of Chicago, who was walking away from the car. The 19-year-old man allegedly produced a pistol and began shooting at trooper Patrick, striking him in the upper body.

During that time, a blue semi truck pulled up. Authorities say that driver and a driver of a second semi truck witnessed the shooting. When trooper Jeff Gruber arrived he began searching for Jeter. Jeter jumped into the blue semi truck and was attempting to drive away when the Trooper Gruber shot him.

Darryl Jeter was taken to the hospital. He does not have life-threatening injuries, according to authorities. They expect to follow up and try to file charges against him.

Trooper Scott Patrick was a family man, married and recently learned his wife is expecting.

Looks like the short of it is the Trooper was checking on what appeared to be a disabled vehicle. The Trooper treated it just like that, a contact with normal people having car trouble. Problem is, the car was stolen and the bad guys didn't want to get tied to it so they killed the trooper. Too bad info didn't catch up. A second call had the license plate that showed it was stolen, but that was too late to do the Trooper any good. Just goes to show that you can never treat any contact lightly. You never know who you are dealing with.
If you look at the Troopers photograph you'll see he appears to have a high/tight military haircut. Some people would probably write him off just for that.
>mild sarcasm on the haircut re: post on aother thread about that<

Scott Patrick was the epitome of the Indiana State Police's motto of integrity, service and professionalism. I would hope that pending a complete investigation Bernie files for the DP.

While I am shocked that he was murdered, I am not shocked that he was murdered checking on a "stranded motorist." That is the reputation of the Indiana State Police and Scott strove to uphold it. Where I grew up the state police were derided as "meter maids" or "traffic cops", however outside the larger cities, they are seen as heros as the town marshal is part-time if his position is funded that year--rescuing stranded motorists, fixing cars, delivering pregnant woman to hospitals, providing directions (Indiana, for some unknown reason, has this thing about not putting up road signs), all the while riding alone with the backup of only a shotgun and perhaps two Sheriff's deputies for the whole county. Truly a horrible day for ISP and the entire state.

Somedays I think I left Chicago behind many years ago. Some days it seeps over its borders with horrific impact. :(

Trooper Patrick was shot and killed at approximately 0430 hours when he stopped to assist what he thought was a stranded motorist, on I-80/94 near the Grant Street exit in Gary, Indiana. The vehicle that was broken down had been stolen the previous week. When Trooper Patrick arrived, he saw the vehicle parked along the side of I-80/94 with two flat tires, and he observed a man walking away from the vehicle. When Trooper Patrick approached the suspect, the suspect drew a handgun and opened fire. Trooper Patrick was able to radio for assistance and return fire, but was killed when he was struck in the upper body, in a place his bullet resistant vest did not cover.

The suspect hid behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer where the driver had stopped after witnessing the incident. The driver of the tractor trailer was able to direct the responding trooper to the suspect's position. When the second trooper approached, the suspect fled on foot and into the cab of the tractor-trailer. The suspect attempted to put the tractor-trailer into gear, but was shot and wounded by the second trooper after he raised his weapon at the approaching trooper.

The suspect was arrested and charged with murder.

Trooper Patrick had served with the Indiana State Police for 3 years, and was assigned to District 13 in Lowell.

He is survived by his expectant wife.
